I am at 3500 miles on odometer. I got 19 on last tank with some boat towing. Back out the towing and I got 20. In my 2009 Prerunner I got a pretty consistent 20.5 to 21 driving back and worth to work. Mostly hwy at 60 - 70 with a fair amount of traffic in the evening. Hoping to get to that level with the 2013.

I noticed a jump in my gas mileage from 15 to about 18 after going up to 91 octane from Shell or Chevron. I just hit the 5,000 mile mark too on my new baby so could it just be the engine breaking in finally? The last 1,000 miles were mainly highway driving at 70mph.

I went on another trip of 275 miles each way and got 22.1 mpg average with mine at a little less than 15,000 miles on it.

I seem to be averaging about 10.25 liters per 100 km. That's been for 3 trips with several stops along the way. I drive about 98 km's/hr on cruise control most of the time. Far as I know 10 liters/100 km's is normally about what's to be expected with a 4.0-liter engine.

I was excited about getting my 19 mpg-20 mpg weekly to and from work and around town. Then I took a road trip this weekend. about 200 miles each way and got 18 mpg the whole time. I don't get it But annoyed to say the least.

You can try all the gimmicks and brand/octane of fuel you like but your MPG is in two places...your right foot and your tachometer. Keep your RPMs under 2500 when accelerating and around 2000-2300 on the highway. I upsized from 215/70's to 235/75 in a heavier tire and still get 25+mpg on the highway. And it's not so much how fast or slow you drive as it is how gently you reach cruising speed. Another thing I learned is that when on the highway DO NOT allow cruise control to shift you down, if you're in hilly country you're better to not use it, it shifts hard(up to 3k RPMs). You can take the same hill and not lose speed WITHOUT down shifting if you use your foot. The computer isn't always best. Just a few things I've learned over the past few years and they work well for me, I use 87 octane from a convenience store and still get 25+. BTW, I have a 2wd 4 banger but the mpg are still better than listed on my window sticker. These are tough little trucks, even my 2wd takes me places I hadn't imagined. :)

He's probably able to get gas without ethanol. That's a big help.

But 23mpg is pretty good for a 4x4 on big rubber.

I should have just got a tundra..lol. But I didn't really get a tacoma for good gas milage, just the fact that i didnt need a full size truck. With everything I've done to my truck, there is no looking back and gas mage is out the window.

I remember another member on TW mentioning that when you are accelerating it is best/most efficient to keep % engine load at around 80-85%. He mentioned that you are actually wasting gas if you feather the gas peddle too lightly when accelerating. Obviously, a Scangauge or Ultragauge is necessary in order to monitor engine load.

Can anyone verify whether this seems accurate or not? (I'm getting better mileage than expected but I like to geek out about some of this stuff.)

I Like this Comment, and it's SO GD true, LOL!!! Ive been driving for 20+ years and have filled up my tank and checked 'Most' tanks milage from all my diff. vehicles. For me it just makes since. BUT, lol, I have those friends that have always stopped by their station every day and pumped their 5 bucks worth.......lol or what ever they have in their pocket at the time I suppose. To me this is just flat ass a huge waste of time, like Rich said, at the end of the month its all the same money. Go a head a fill the tank for the reason of being able to use that time doing something else AND being able to check your milage correctly. Just my Opinion.

I didn't even consider the waste of time.
But ya... dropping $5 a day into the tank, even if it only wastes 10 minutes, that's an hour a week.

ah you are correct. i just read that in the manual. so am i figuring my mileage wrong? does the 17.6 lmp gal in the manual mean, when the low level fuel light comes on? so technically if i filled up at 17.5 gallons or so, did i have 3.6 gallons remaining, on reserve?

i figured my mileage based on total miles at fill up, divided by last fueled up, total gallons..
