    Fill tank
    Zero trip odometer
    Drive truck
    Fill tank, write down gallons.
Look at trip odometer, write down miles and reset.
Divide miles by gallons = mpg.

The low fuel light comes on anywhere between 16.5 and 18 or so... but don't count on it, some have reported it not coming on and they've taken 20.

And remember that if you've changed to larger tires, the odometer will not reflect the correct mileage (it will show less miles than you actually traveled).

I got 18.56631357931356 mpg on the last tank. I'm wondering if I went down to 265s, instead of my current 285s BFgs load range, if I could hit 20 mph. It getting close to new tires time.

Never more accurate than the number in the equation with the least significant digits.
In this case, xx.x miles and xx.xxx gallons.... round it to 18.6, you can't be accurate to two decimal places ;)
If you're pulling better than 18 on the 285s, it's a good possibility that you could hit 20, especially if you drop the load rating (weight).

My first fill up showed 16 and change, at 257miles (total miles, new truck). Filled it up today since I was there and the price was down, and at 515 miles it showed an even 18.0 mpg. So, as it's breaking in, it's climbing. So far, so good. Still not old enough to know for sure, but it looks promising, and I hope it keeps climbing.

All other things being equal, it takes less energy to spin a small tire at higher RPM than it does for a larger tire at lower RPM, and this translates to better fuel efficiency. Braking and steering are also improved with the smaller tire. The only practical reason for a larger tire is to gain ground clearance. If that isn't a factor, use the stock-size tire. The 265/70R16 should provide slightly better steering feel than the 245/75R16, and if you have 16x8 wheels it is a better fit. Within a given size, tire weight makes a difference. The "P" tire is what you want for efficiency. LT tires are more rugged and heavier, and a better choice for rough terrain than the road.

Ok. So here's my deal. I've had my new 13 DCLB 4x4 sport for about 700mi now. My first tank was shit for MPG. My second was a bit better but still shit. My third is the same as the 2nd. Catch my drift? 3 used tanks and barely have a little over 700. Anyone see anything wrong with this? Or is this normal for an engine breaking in?

That does not sound normal, BUT....

What kind of driving? Are you just making short hops around town, and especially the hilly parts north of downtown, or are you getting out on the highway?

You can click my fuelly link in my sig to see what I get tank-by-tank, but one thing that is a killer is short trips and stop and go in-town traffic.

My personal worst was last Friday. Gassed up in the morning and rolled 30 miles around town shopping with my wife.
When I left for work Monday morning, my Ultragauge indicated that my average for that tank would have been 14.3mpg had I refueled at that point.
By the time I got to work Wednesday, it was up to 23.5 and I ended up at 23.8 for the tank.

Also, when you say "tanks", how many gallons are you taking per fillup?
The tank holds 21 gallons, the low fuel light comes on when you are down around 17 or so.
700 miles on "3 tanks" of 10 gallons is very good for a 4x4.
700 miles on "3 tanks" of 15 gallons is bad, but not unexpected for a V6 4x4 driven around town.

I was down to less than a 1/4 tank when I refueled both times, once with the gas light on. So basically I was filling up 15-17 gallons both times. I did one long trip to Los Angeles and back to my place (each way 65 mi) but the rest of the time I'm doing short hops around my town. Kids to school, grocery store, park, etc. no hills really. Pretty flat out here and neither my wife or myself have a heavy foot. I keep thinking it's the new engine braking process.

That doesn't seem too good. But, no two engines will break in exactly the same. I wouldn't get too concerned until after your first oil change... somewhere up in that mileage range. I filled up at about 250 miles on my 2 fill ups with a little more than a 1/4 tank left each time. 16ish on the first and 18 the second. I'm at 611 miles now, and a little under full. Hope it starts climbing for you soon.
