and the daughter loves doing scouts stuff (not GSA, the BSA version) but really, that's not the problem, it's all about forming community networks.

This thread is about being self sufficient and your idea is to rely on others. I love it lol.

I didn’t take it that way perhaps I misunderstood. It is about being self sufficient you are absolutely correct but no matter how self sufficient I feel I may become I think things would be easier with community. For me, the idea would be to form a community where we can all pull from each others strengths I don’t see a way the 2 of us could truly make it on our own in a bad situation no matter how independent we are.

Put a bunch of people with the self sufficiency mindset together and you have a community of self sufficiency. This is the goal. Nobody is going to survive going the way of the lone wolf, no matter how self sufficient you think you are. Humans are better and accomplish way more as a community.

Having people you can rely on is a prep all in itself.

I mean yes, 'self sufficiency' means you do lots of the functions of society on your own, but you gotta sleep sometime, there's plenty of jobs that take more than one or two pairs of hands to accomplish, and better to have the (social) tools to work together before a crisis occurs, than to come up with them after the fact.

Because after the fact, trust becomes an issue. Are they really trying to join forces? Or are they just manipulating me so they can stab me in the back and take all of my preps?

There's a quarter of a million people without power this morning in my area because of severe storms last night... I'm betting few, if any were "prepared".

I find it ironic that people are rarely prepared for weather events - storms and snow and such - but think they're going to survive the Walking Dead.

Multiple coworkers have dead cell phones, uncharged vapes etc because they couldn't be bothered to be prepared. I mean, a simple flashlight pointed at the bathroom ceiling is enough to at least have a shower. Even a cheap battery pack can charge a cell phone or a vape.

It's those every day things we take for granted that are rather easy to take care of.

We buy canned potatoes at Aldi. 89 cents a can and last a long time. Use in quick soups.
In GA we can get 2 crops of potatoes a year (spring and fall), so canning them on a large scale does not make sense for us.

Pears are ripe, so we will be canning a ton of pear slices this weekend. Will try to do 14 quarts on Saturday and 14 on Sunday. We'll see.

PS Will try to take pics and post them in the canning thread. We have a fairly easy way of doing them.

To be fair, having water pressure but no electricity means it's a localized disruption. Not to mention whatever hot water you have left over in your heater tank. Otherwise that shower is a little more involved since you gotta obtain then heat up water somewhere. Showers are optional (but lovely), anyway, but well down the list of essentials. Vapes too, really. Cell phones are essential comms so in a power loss, likely a good idea to think about how to minimize power use and keep 'em alive. That is, if the cell network is running. But if you're able to ascertain their condition, things aren't really that bad in any case.
