When I moved from 265/70-16's to 285/75-16's I bought five wheels and tires. I rotate the spare into the fold at every rotation.

A little of this and a little of that.
Yes, same size spare. When I went from stock 16” to BBS 17” wheels, I purchased a spare 17” steelie wheel from CL and mounted 5 new 17” tires.

I dunno. Just got them mounted a month or so ago and the tire shop put it in there. They voiced no complaints, however.

Does size really matter for temporary use?

What does matter is proper lug nuts. had to save a set for my spare since wheel different on spare.

Definitely. Especially if you have a long way to go to get home or to an accessible road and/or poor terrain to get there across.

If it’s your DD and you never leave 10 miles of your house, there’s nothing wrong with that, and an inch smaller spare will work.. but if you’re doing few thousand mile road trips with a lot of back highways and off road trails to get to remote camping spots, etc. there’s no way I’d roll with a smaller diameter spare.

About 33", but that's OK. If you're doing trails that require anything bigger, you'd likely destroy the spare at the factory location coming off ledges, etc.

I am running Cooper ST Maxx 255/85/16 and always buy 5 so I can rotate them all and then my spare is just a normal tire in the mix.

If the 4 tires on the ground were 2-3" taller than the spare I'd upgrade the spare. But in this case he's talking about 1/2" The 4 tires on the ground will be more than 1/2" smaller than the spare even if you started with 5 identical tires and the 4 on the ground had 25,000-30,000 miles on them and the spare were still new.

I've had 5 identical tires and done a 5 way rotation in the past, but in this case you're worrying about nothing. I keep an air compressor in the truck along with plugs and tools. In the last 20 years I've patched at least 20 flats, mostly for others. I've only had to put the spare on one time. Even those times where the tire was ruined plugging it and airing up got me back to a tire store. That is a lot easier, safer, and faster than having to change tires. But I wouldn't go out without a spare. There is always the possibility it is going to be too damaged to plug.

reviving this thread. just paid for 5 tires. all same size, 265/75/r16. falken wild peak at3w

I didnt consider the spare size vs the size of spare wheel. Suggestions on how to go about this? Someone mentioned to me they bought a used tire and kept that as a spare bc it didn't make sense to them to put a brand new tire under the truck. Last spare I bought was brand new and I stuck in under truck for 4ish years until about a month ago and its mostly discolored but still works for temporary use. I do somewhat agree with this gentleman's thought but I wanted to pick other brains on the matter. I kinda prefer to go same size spare tire in case I resort to using it at some point a few years down the road. Current spare may be a half inch smaller but feels funny at times.

Also, will a 265/75/r16 falken wild peak even fit on the stock spare wheel of a 2017 sr5? I do not remember the original stock tire size as I upgraded to a 265/70/r16 (TRD OR takeoffs). Not sure if any of this info will help determine an answer
