Yes, that can happen - I've made the same argument numerous times in the past when talking about pictures people have posted where it looks like they are or even just might be off trail but really aren't (because that's part of the problem, defining off trail and when/how it is acceptable). However it's a little different when you're looking at pictures of the end result of something without knowing what happened. If the guy rolled off the upper trail, the only people who can use that are the real die hard, shut everything down types who are going to use any picture of an incident or even just that it happened for their argument. It would be different if there were pictures of posing on the rock, or the vehicle in a normal driving condition being where it is.

… So? I don't have skids and would have no issues driving that road. He's got the factory 'skid plates' for an OR package, which is all a lot of people have and is really needed for a pretty high percentage of trails here. He has steps instead of sliders... Just not sure I understand your point, unless you're just making a point-less (as opposed to pointless) observation.

I agree, somewhat. The risk these pictures pose is that someone can say "look at these idiots, they have no idea what they're doing, they shouldn't be allowed on the trail"

A lot of them shouldn't! Seriously though, yes, that argument can be and is used - sheriff wants to shut Black Bear down because it attracts so many of those types of people who end up having incidents despite all the other people who do know what they're doing and run it safely. And there can be a pretty fine line between being stupid and making a bad call, as with the previous rollover incident I mentioned on this trail.

    Lol. Yeaaaaaahhhh....

Definitely. Be nice if there was some sort of licensing process or something. Like ham radio, but for offroading. Some sort of minimal requirement to weed out the idiots.

That was a high speed "hold my beer and watch this" moment. He didn't flop off any rock or roll down from another trail. That truck landed there after being airborne.
Total idiot moment, hope the occupants are ok and maybe got a wake up call.

Lol...I dont know how to post pictures from my android either.
Certain designated trails in Colorado do require on OHV permit even for licensed, street legal motor vehicles. While I dont think it's a hard and fast rule, I recall hearing it applies to roads with "trail" in the name, like Jenny Creek trail was one I recall on the list. Whether or not permits are enforced is another thing.

My gut reaction is that I would support requiring permits for certain roads. I don't know that argentine is one of them, but Canyonlands national park for example requires permits for specific dates and tries to educate people about what could go wrong on the trail. I wouldnt go that far, but I think a 3 or 5 year permit isnt outlandish for use of certain trails...that wouldn't upset me.

Yes. You need to save the image (download) then pick it from the download folder when uploading.

Finally back to a computer and can give more comprehensive info than I could on my phone. I've updated the post with the photos as I realized I'd doubled up on one of them. Location of the rollover is 39.6345944,-105.7679389. The lower trail is mostly horizontal, with the upper trail climbing relatively steeply. Called it into emergency services, and they were already aware of it. They made it sounds like the driver had already called it in. No mention of injuries and didn't see any evidence when I checked the vehicle. Given the lack of damage, it appeared to be a low speed event, all of the drivetrain appeared intact, I'd bet you could flip it back and drive it out without too much of an issue. The terrain is pretty mild in that area and the angle of the vehicle doesn't line up with any path of travel, so I'm at a loss for how it may have happened. All together, not what I expected to encounter when I went out this morning.

EDIT: After further review of the photos, going to put forth a theory. Based on the damage to the driver's side rear bumper and the angle of the wheels, it looks like it hit the driver's side rock at speed. I'm guessing there was an attempt at a fast 3 point turn, and then an unpleasant surprise as the rear tire climbed the rock and tipped the truck over.

EDIT2: Just noticed the drivers mirror appears broken, likely meaning they rolled completely over. Plus the front end damage is more severe than I originally thought. I'm retracting my theory and going back to 'I have no idea how this happened'.

Not really grumpy, more like confused. And yes, people can certainly comment whether or not it's relevant. :)

It's not the name, it's the designation of road vs trail - mostly as related to MVUMs since some 'roads' are worse than some 'trails' and some 'trails' are actually county roads. We have a thread on it for those interested: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ohv-permit-stickers.475829/

Certain roads in Canyonlands do require permits (now, specifically talking about White Rim, and for a long time talking about Elephant or Horse Canyon) but that's more about access numbers limitations or making/recouping money than driver skill. As you mention there are similar things in place, usually more for hiking - for example Arches you can go into the Fiery Furnace on your own, but have to watch a video about resource damage every time before they give you a permit, and some places like Glacier make you watch a bear safety video before giving back country permits. Enforcement would be a pretty big problem as would backlash for implementing such a system, particularly depending on what it entailed. In some ways I can see having another endorsement on your license. But it'd really come down to there being teeth or meaning behind things (just plunking your $25 down to get your sticker isn't going to mean much imho, or even watching a little video for some people though that would be better), and the fact that responsibility over permission is the preferred way of doing things.

Oh, and for anyone interested, I found a series of posts on the FJ rollover on this trail I mentioned earlier (note it's in the BS thread, so there's non-related posts interspersed):
