    Well, I'll admit my research consisted of reading the SEARS ad one Sunday morning. Wasn't aware you could get one for under $100 bucks.

    It's actually not that bad........it was a hand me down from my parents.......and my former roommate bought a bunch of bags for it that I still have........so it's a zero cost machine that does the job.:)

    And for the record, I run the brush on bare floor setting while vacuuming the carpet. I like the groomed look it has afterwards. I think I remember changing the belt once in the last ten years.:D

    I'm glad everyone got a kick out of this. I didn't expect such a petty argument turn into such a laugh. Every time I'm vacuuming he has to run over to the vacuum and mess with the setting. Hopefully this thread ends all that. :)

    Unless you have a real high pile carpet I think if a vacuum motor struggles when it is all the way down then it is a cheap vacuum.

    It is worth the "I told you so" factor. I'm married... I have to take what I can get.
    If she burns it up, it won't be just her money buying a new one. We are a household. The money is ours, not mine or hers. So I would rather make something last, rather than just replace it. The vacuum has met it's service life though I guess.

    I lay carpet for a living, and you're 100% right on how to set it.

    Bogging out the motor to attempt a "deep clean" will only mushroom the carpet naps faster causing it to wear out faster.

    This is assuming that you have a plush carpet. If you have a ber ber or another type of low pile/stiff nap carpet then the lowest setting possible without bogging the vacuum motor will result is the best cleaning.

    For a new vacuum setting it on bare floor and vacuuming a pile carpet is a bad thing and yes, it could wear out some of the mechanisms prematurely. Most vacuums nowadays don't have belts. However as the vacuum gets older and is used a lot the bristles on the brushes tend to wear down prompting you to lower the setting gradually to maintain contact with the carpet or you need to purchase new brushes. If you have a tight woven berber carpet or something like a commercial carpet then the bare floor setting could be used without any problems.
