And yeah, I'll admit..... I haven't been following everything. How did this topic of 'armed security' become a discussion of different schools & education?
What does education have anything to do with armed security at our schools?

You're absolutely crazy to think you can send your kids to a different school and they'll be safer..... Security or not.....

Remember what happened to those poor Amish kids here in PA?

Really? People who kill other people have mental health issues? And again I ask you, how are we going to treat these people? You have to know someone has an issue before you can treat it. How are you going to do this? Yearly check ups for the entire 350,000,000 people living in the USA? One year is a long time, people can snap faster than that. Maybe they started getting bullied in a new school or for something they did. Want to bump that to MONTHLY checkups for the 350,000,000 people in this country? Well what about people who snap even faster than that? How about people who snap after their spouse tries to leave them, now we're down to weekly or daily checkups for 350,000,000 people? Well I'll give you this, it would certainly create a lot of needed jobs, but that's about it. In order to TREAT a mental health issue, you have to FIND a mental health issue. What you and others don't seem to get is there is already mental health help out there, but these people don't think they need it or want it, and short of massive invasions of EVERYONE'S privacy to find them they're not going to get it.

I'd rather go the israeli way and have the teachers and administrators trained in active shooter situations than have 1 or 2 armed men entrusted with having to protect a whole school/hundreds of students and teachers because at that point, whats to stop a smart shooter from going after the security guards first and then running amock. My gf and i had a heated debate over armed teachers and my logic was if i had kids, i'd want to give them a fighting chance and would rather have each class individually protected by a trained teacher instead having 1 single point of failure (a few security guards). my gf retorted with "what if that teacher goes crazy?", well then there are 20 other teachers that are around to stop him instead of letting him run around shooting as many people as he could before the 1 security guard finally gets to him (that's considering the fact that the teacher didn't already kill the security guard, then what?). That's just my .02 though. I don't think there's such a thing as a right or wrong answer here. As long as another massacre like this doesn't happen.

And what I really think is foolish is your lack of trust in Teachers, security guards, and police officers to be able to make a decision and take actions which could very well save your child's life, but you trust the government to make a mental health care plan that will be able to find a few needles in a VERY LARGE haystack.

    Agreed.....
It may be obvious in some cases, but sketchy in others.

This topic is far too close to home for me...... and I don't bring it up much but its appropriate here.

My father-in-law was apparently suffering first stages of dementia. He'd been in the hospital and had taken meds - but they eventually cleared him 'safe' and to come back home. Not long after being home, he committed suicide. Nobody can explain why....but we try to believe that *he knew* he wasn't RIGHT.....and took his own life to prevent the family from dealing with it (he was that type of person).

The point here being..... The medical professionals claimed he was SAFE to go home. Really???

Start another argument for me. ask her what is to stop a teacher from going crazy now? Nothing has obviously stopped these other people. Is there some psychic power guns have over people? I've carried a gun for years, and not once considered going on a shooting rampage (though it has gotten me out of confrontations with nothing but a glimpse from the other person inside my jacket). Have I just not had a gun long enough for it to break down my subconscious mental barriers? I think i'll start wearing a tinfoil hat to prolong my mental battle with my gun if this is the case!! :tinfoilhat:

I know its been said before, but no one can prevent incidents. You can minimize them though. The only thing that will stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with one. I voted for.

Me, all of my friends and every preceding and consecutive graduating class in my highschool, middle school and elementary school and every school like them in a 50 mile radius made it through without an armed gunman ever coming on campus and killing any of us. But yes, we definitely need fundamental change to deal with this problem.

I also think we need armed ticket-takers at movie theaters to discourage armed maniacs from attending showings as well.

I'd feel much better knowing that my children were vigorously searched by disgruntled and underpaid security personnel before and between every class, personally.

You keep trying to put words in my mouth that aren't there

My point is that any free market system will have schools that more people want to get into than there is space for , kinda like colleges and univeristies now . There will have to be some way to disqualify or qualify students access based on available space .

I would suggest that in a free market school system , that qualifier would be a monetary sum

Easy to snuff out kids during recess on the playground while the guard is "guarding" a classroom, right ? One guard for a large school ? Not likely. How about a bad guy wearing a Cop uniform and confusing everyone while blasting away.

i haven't read the last 15 pages but I know this thread is going to be full of problems.

People in society are so afraid of weapons that if somebody has a ccw on them and walk into a "weapon free zone" they are the worst person in the world. When in reality that person walking around in the "weapon free zone" with his ccw could save your ass if somebody goes around shooting people.

I think that we don't need armed security in schools, "weapon free zones" need to be taken out of the equation then the average person that has a ccw can carry and protect themselves and others everywhere they go.

Personally, I go to college and when school is in session I spend most of my time at school and when I turn 21 in a couple months I am going to try to get a ccw myself and it bothers me that where i spend most of my time I won't be able to protect myself or others around me.

i havent read all these pages either, but, armed guards are nothing new in schools. My high school had two armed police officers on campus. I know in Oakland, the armed guards do not deter shootings. But, then again, no one cares or wants to ban guns when black or mexican kids are killing each other. I apologize if someone else has brought this point up in the thread.
