Yesterday's murder of the firefighters was by a convicted felon.
Served 18 years for beating his grandmother to death with a hammer in 1980.

Subnote: It was a felony for him to be in possession of something as simple as a single round of ammunition.

Gun control laws did not protect those firefighters.

I really believe we need to form a congressional commission on hammers...and more specificially, assault hammers.

maybe if she was packing her own hammer, things would have been different. we need hammers in every kitchen. The more hammers out there, the less hammer deaths there will be.:p

Lets take a look at our goals here.
We want to protect our children from being shot.
Lets take a look at the problem here.
Mentally unstable people are acquiring guns, some legally, some illegally and shooting unarmed and undefended children.
Lets take a look at the required solution.
We need to find these mentally unstable people to treat them before they can commit these atrocious crimes.
    How do we do that?
Nobody knows. It is a complicated, slippery slope that has not been figured out in decades and even with the recent tragedies will still take years to figure out.
But wont pouring more money into mental health help?
Yes and no. More funding will allow better treatment for the few we do find, however you still need a system to find the ones that need help.
This sounds like it is going to take a long time to figure out. Is there anything we can do that might protect our children from these kinds of people now?
We could allow armed teachers, security guards, and police on school campus.
Wouldn't it be dangerous to have more guns around children?
Everyday you go outside you statistically pass 3 people legally carrying concealed weapons (not including law enforcement) and yet I'm assuming you made it home unharmed. Every year there are less than a handful of negligent discharges by ccw's in the US. negligent discharges by ccw holders leading to injury or death are even more rare, usually measured in decades.
This seems like an imperfect solution.
It is. However if we helped educate the public, both children and adults alike on proper gun safety, handling, use, and the dangers there in they might better understand the problem. This solution may be better than doing nothing until we figure out a better solution like we are now.

    This.

When talk of "shall issue" comes up, there are cries of "blood will run in the streets".
Like a comment above about "getting in a gunfight isn't in the job description"

Teacher, construction worker, bus driver... Those who desire to carry should have the ability to do so.
More bullets flying? Rather than 25 lives being lost before the cops arrive, maybe it will be only 5, which means that at least 20 bullets didn't fly.

Police are already trained in securing a scene and determining who is and isn't the bad guy. Whether teachers are carrying or not, the first cops on the scene are not going to assume that someone is unarmed simply because they don't see a gun. Ditching the gun and blending in with the crowd to escape is Hollywood... not reality.

Arizona is a Constitutional Carry state, and blood is not running in the streets.
Nobody is looking to act as a hero, nobody wants to be the Lone Ranger, nobody is going to go looking for criminals to stop. Nobody is going to rush into a shopping mall where there is an active shooter looking to save the day.
The people who would do that will already do that regardless of a CCW permit, because they are already on the wrong side of the law.
With a CCW comes great responsibility, and the majority of those who carry fully understand that.

    The law is very clear.
You may fire on someone if you feel that your life or the life of another is in immediate danger. In some states, the Castle Doctrine allows the use of deadly force to protect personal property.
That doesn't give you the right to rush INTO a situation. If you happen to be in WalMart and someone at the register starts unloading, you have the right to defend that person... of course, if you can do so without endangering others... clear shot, clear backstop.
That's why nobody took a shot at Loughtner after he shot Rep. Giffords. The crowd was packed too tightly and there would have been no way to put him down without undue risk to others.

But if you are in the parking lot and hear shots going off inside, you do not have the right to run in and try to take the shooter down.

There's a very very good book - that I often recommend ... and believe me, I don't read much at all, but I've read a lot of different Self Defense books in the last year or so. This ONE book stands out from the rest and is the best book I've read.

If you're a CCW holder and haven't read this - I highly RECOMMEND IT!!

If you're an anti-gun person, this book might just open your eyes to the responsibilities of CCW. There's a lot more to it than just 'carrying a gun'. This book will OPEN your eyes.

Never? How can you say that? It depends on the situation.

I don't think anyone reading this thread can say that having an armed guard will prevent the violence in every case.

The point of the matter is..... Having armed guards, non-armed guards, volunteer citizens.... whoever... ANYONE... to serve as extra sets of EYES to watch for suspicious activity. EARLY WARNING SIGN.

And to be honest... Unless its a full time police officer, I'm pretty sure that armed guards are limited to how they can deal with situations. Armed guards are not the cure all..... but they may be able to help prevent a situation.
It's better than nothing at all!!

Sarcastically it's very easy to say :D

While I am no longer a member of the NRA because I don't support "all" they are about I do agree with them on this one.

Not sure if serious. Assassination and mass murder are very different circumstances...

Edit: Now sure not serious...Well played!!!

I also have an issue with the definition of mass murder. Did you know it's used when 4 or more people are killed?

Seems we need to up that number a little bit. If 4 is "mass murder" then that happens just about every weekend in Philly.

I dig it...Society today plays so many semantics games to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy. We need to worry less about the words and more about the content/reality...

Not just 4, but I believe it has to be at least 4, in one incident in one location

Yep. Wiki has what I consider a retarded definition of it. Anywhere from 4 people to 8,000,000 or more.

IMO mass murder means a "mass" of people. I do not consider four a "mass".

Anywho I would prefer if I had children that they be guarded by armed professionals. If a armored car requires armed guards the future of America (our children) should receive similar protection if not more. After all insured paper money < kids.
