    Sounds good to me.

Any large group of people in public need some sort of protection if they are unwilling to protect themselves. Many churches are targets of violence.

There is a simple way around every measure mentioned in this thread.

Armed guards in school I agree with. Hell, my highschool already does it. Last time I counted we had 5 of 'em.

Armed teacher, I do not agree with. They would have to keep the gun in a safe, which if someone comes rushing into the room shooting the teacher wont have time to go unlock the safe and fire back. Most likely they will be the first to get shot. If they DONT keep it in a safe and they carry it, out of the hundreds of teachers in my school, i know about 15 of them that couldnt be taken down by one of the kids, 10 of those being coaches. Some kid out for blood would just be able to take it from the majority of teachers. Armed teachers are NOT the answer.

Yes, move the the safest place on earth. Iceland. Norway is also a good option at #2. :D

I do agree though. No quick easy answer.
Also doesn't help that half of the country strongly disagrees with the other half.

Maybe what is needed is historical research into mass murders and who commits them. What is the common thread??? I think the results would be interesting.......I would bet that mental illness is at the top of the list.......ah, but I digress from the intended topic of this thread.

IMO no sane person would ever commit mass murder.

Mental health is a MAJOR issue the US needs to resolve. Sadly we are just as divided as a country when it comes to health care as we are when it comes to gun legislation.

I've been shooting since I was 11 (47 now), and I am very proficient with both rifles and handguns and would consider myself an expert marksman. I am also a teacher (18 years now), and I would never want to carry a gun in school- I don't want my students to view me in that fashion. What I can do on a rifle or pistol range would be of little use in a fluid, chaotic live fire situation.

Besides the need to drastically improve our mental health care system in this country, we also need to stop thinking of our public schools as public places. There should be highly controlled access into schools, with all entry and exit points regulated. People will bitch about locking down our schools ("I'm a taxpayer" is one I've heard frequently), but your average person can't just walk into the White House or other government buildings/bases, and nobody seems to have an issue with that, even though those were built and are support by tax dollars.

As always, just my deux centime.

Holy Hell. I cannot believe how many people have voted yes in this vote. I do not think this is the best way to go about a solution to the issue that has caused this debate. Understandably I do not have children, I live in Canada and therefore have not grown up with guns as a successful/ readily available means of protection.
That said, we/I do not live in a third world country. We as a continually growing society should be able to use the amazing resources we have grown up with and helped to improve over the years to solve the underlying issues without taking a step back and needing weaponry. This incident shows, in the extremes, what one single, mentally ill, volitile human can do with the WRONG resources. Obviously my opinions are biased but dont you feel adding another available weapon and human would further the problem.
As an advanced civilization I feel, in this day and age, we need to work together to better these problems right from the start. The help is out there but at what cost? What length must one go to get the help?
I am deeply saddened by what has happened and my heart goes to the families of those touched by this tragic incident.

I have not voted in the poll.

because I believe the decision should be made at the local level, not the fed level. As I have posted...I believe the feds should get out of the education business.

And security is another reason why I support school vouchers. Allow the local school board...parents...and students...make their education decisions. Including, but not limited to...security.

What a heated and devisive issure. It has to go beyone armed security. The teachers need the option to defend the defenceless students. That is the nature of the times we live in. 26 dead in Conn., What would it have been if one or more of the teachers were armed? A little over four min. from the shots fired call till the call stating no more shots, could a security guard on a large campus react in time? As far as the gun conrtol advocates, that horse left the barn a long time ago. Mental health care?, always a good ideal. As a superintendent of a large teacher armed school distict in Texas said: "there is a good reason these people do not attack police stations".Give the teachers and kids a chance, lets stop making schools the soft target they are.
