I'm wanting to add skid plates and rock sliders to my '18 TRD Off Road. My question is: should I expect any noticeable (yes, that's deliberately ambiguous) effects on the suspension (or anything else for that matter) from adding the approximately 200 lbs low down and distributed on the truck? Obviously it's going to cut into the payload a bit but other than that should it make much difference? Thanks!

I was really hoping to get some information on this. There have to be some of you out there running skid plates and sliders on stock suspensions. Is there any reason why that’s not a good idea?

You ever put 200lbs in the back and feel how much the ride differs? Now, imagine that much weight in the front; while the front suspension weren’t meant to handle extra load. Your stance will slope and ride will suffer.

It's all incremental. I added bigger, heavier tires. Noticeable difference. Then I added a winch and hidden mount. Not really noticeable. Then added sliders, then skids. I can't tell a difference, but if I added it all in one shot, I would bet I could absolutely tell. So, lift is in the cards along with a rear bumper. For now, I am on stock suspension and have almost 6k miles on the truck. If I had older suspension, I would bet the difference would be a lot bigger. It's not much different than having an extra passenger or two, but I bet you notice it.

I ran sliders with stock suspension with no issue, but definitely went with heavy duty lift coils and leaf springs when I added bumpers and skids.

200 lbs of armor is light, sliders will add 150 lbs alone.

Add another 50 or 60 lbs for a winch cause getting stuck alone sucks big time.

I've been driving 3/4 and 1 ton trucks most of my life and never had to worry about the weight of bumpers and such. The 2019 TRD OR I'm waiting on will be my first small truck since 1988-ish. I am planning on adding skids, plates, a front bumper (TBD brand/model) and possibly a Diamondback bed cover. I do really want to retain the stock ride height IF POSSIBLE. Is it possible to do this?

    Thanks!

With all that weight I think you will eventually go to 600-650lb springs. I got a winch & mount (+100 lbs), sliders (+150 lbs), Front and transmission skids (+100 lbs) with 2nd gen PRO suspension. That got me 2 inch lift and 600 lb coil springs. If I ever swap out the front shocks it will include 650 lb springs.

How many "pounds" are the OEM offroad springs? I've got kings now with 600lbs springs and am about to install some sliders and an aluminum skid this weekend. I'm hoping it doesn't sag much and hopefully soften up a bit.

I haven't had a small truck sense 91 and just leaving a ram 3500 this is a big change. But it is fun learning and working on this little turd(2018 Tacoma TRD Offroad). I have added dinky stuff such as:

    Interior LED
    Carhart seat covers
    Speakers/little amp behind stereo
    pop a lock
A.R.E Camper shell but theses days they are calling it a truck cap.

    I have purchased(but not installed)
    OME's lift with 888's & 600lb springs
    Dif drop spacer
    Swing bearing drop
    3 degree shim
    ECGS bushing
    UCA's(Total Chaos)
    Spidertrax wheel spacer
Prinsu Racks one for the cap & one for the shell

I will be taking truck to Vegas 4x4 & Off-road next week to have 488 gears installed. Sense they have to remove axles I will have them install the ECGS bushing while they are in there. Wanted to get gears changed before I do any other work just incase there are issues I can resolve them before continuing with the changes.

Yes there is a lot to learn on these little trucks but its a lot of fun.

Wow, you are going all out! That's awesome! Sounds like some great upgrades. I'm getting seat covers, floor mats, steering wheel cover and a few other things for the interior to start. I've also been talking to Erick at State48Overland about what my intended use is (hunting, exploring, etc ) to figure out what I need. We'll see!

I retired from the Army out of Creech/Nellis AFB. We spent 18 months there. Loved going to the NFR and SHOT Show. Great location for off roading and exploring.

    Be safe!

Do you have any photos of your seat covers? I’m looking for seat covers at the moment myself, I’ve had TJM in the past but this is the first double cab I’ve owned since I was 18 (and also in Australia). Does anyone have any suggestions on seat covers for a DC 2011 Tacoma?
