I agree...that's why surprising them is a bad idea...on the move in bear country I always try to make noise...

Media here always makes such a big deal out of it...but IMHO most of the attacks are because people surprised the bear...bear scared/feels threatened...more of a defensive situation versus offensive. I think the only time they go offensive (against humans) is when there isn't a plentiful food source for them...again my humble opinion.

Very true on the momma bear and cubs...only bear charging/attacking humans story I know of from someone I know personally involved exactly that situation. Cubs wandered over to one side of foot path while momma stayed on the other side...group of guys (3) walked down the path a little too quietly...ended up shooting the momma bear:(

....that's why I'm constantly whistling, singing, or talking out loud when I get in those kind of areas...sometimes people think I'm a little , but I don't want to be put in that situation where I have to shoot a momma bear. Wife's crazy about bears...I'm under strict orders to avoid hurting/killing bears. She's ok with moose and/or caribou hunting for the meat...but NO bears...I'm in full agreement with her. :)

ya some people are just ignorant when it comes to walking around in wild life country.
they teach you that in school to make noise when you are walking through the bush, especially at night.
