For the hell of it...(because, I could probably find the answer if I searched google)

What's the going rate of the Canadian dollar (to American) now-a-days?

I've got a husband who's never been up there. I haven't been up there in 20 years.....going up labor day weekend. What types of 'canadian' things should we expose ourselves to?
Other than Canadian beer, what's a good authentic Canadian liquor or drink?

Depends where you go, what areas are you looking at visiting?? I'm familiar with a good portion of things from ontario, quebec, and the maritimes. (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia)

Oh, and the going rate (right now anyways) is 0.97$, but it will probably dip a little as the day progresses.

depends where you are, if I go north a bit into the provincial parks there are lots of bears.

As for the guys talking about banning pepper spray, if they keep a ban on all this type of stuff, including guns, it makes it harder for criminals to get their hands on. Also rarely would a canadian citizen need a gun or pepper spray, if anyone tries to rob me ill punch them out, I dont need a pussy ass gun or pepper spray.

Why do I see a million cars/trucks from Quebec towing campers down the Garden State parkway in NJ every summer. It seems to me that there would be much better camping in the Great White North eh? :canada:

I'll be more in the southern Ontario areas...(Kitchener/Waterloo). About 4 hours (???) north of Niagara Falls.

You can have bear spray if it's reasonable to do so. ie: If you're camping in the bush where it's obvious bears will be. Carrying it around in a complete urban environment where there's no chance of running into a bear, you'll run into some issues.

Technically, bear spray (mister) and "pepper spray" (smaller can w/ stream) are classified as prohibited weapons. Same as brass knuckles, butterfly knives, high capacity mags, etc. Using pepper spray on a person is illegal and their purpose is meant solely for animals.

That said, if your wife or whoever has one of those dinky cans in their purse and hoses down some clown trying to rob them, no Judge in their right mind would convict your wife of assault with a weapon.

Rye whisky is probably our most famous contribution to the hard liquor menu. Look for 18 yr old Gibsons, Wisers...Pendelton if you can find it (nothing older than 2003 though). Crown Royal is overrated syrup.

Other than that, wine from BC is probably your best bet. BC wines, particularly from the Okanagan Valley, are gaining worldwide recognition. My favourite is Mission Hill Reserve Shiraz and the Cabernet-Sauvignon.

Obviously you know our beer kicks-ass, especially if you avoid the big breweries offerings (Labatt, Molsons). Sleemans, Alexander Keiths, Big Rock, Okanagan Springs and Granville Island Breweries are all quality beers.

As for things Canadians do on Labour Day weekend.....

Hunting, fishing/fly fishing, hiking, camping, downhill/ x-country mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, scuba diving, sail boarding, hang gliding, golfing, wake-boarding, atv'ing, offroading, rock climbing, dirt jumping, skydiving, beer gardens, street brawling, BBQ contests, bungee jumping, white water rafting, caving, wine tasting, boutique shopping, antiquing, tail-gating, football, softball, baseball, pub crawls, soccer, lacrosse, skeet-shooting, archery, garage sales, car shows, bike shows, old home days, frontier days, rodeos, fairs and expositions, kayaking, house boating, small engine repair, cleaning out the garage, lumber jack sports and hockey training camps.....

.....to name a few, I'm sure I've missed some.

    Enjoy your stay.
