I had a car before I had a truck. I called my car a car, and now I call my truck a truck.

Some people are really stupid and unfortunately those people get noticed more than the normal people, so it makes the general population seem stupid. This is true no matter which country you're talking about. (Makes me think of that "you are so stupid, you are really stupid... fo' real" picture.)

And to be honest, if you just look at the dash/interior of a standard model, you could easily mistake the 2nd gen Tacoma for a car. I think the designers were going for the "it's a truck that drive like a car" angle, which pissed off some truck enthusiasts.
