... ^^^ ... In the past when those problems occurred with various jacks (including headphone) ... a little CRC contact cleaner fixed it ... unless it had a short.

... I keep a can of CRC and use it a lot to keep contacts clean on laptops, ipods, iphones & etc.

It takes that "scratchy" (trying to make good contact) sound out.

So I'm wanting to buy an Iphone 3g or 3gs to unlock so I can use it on Straight Talk. I keep reading things about these unlocks not holding and getting switched back to locked. Is this true? Is it just a matter of not upgrading software to avoid this?

Also have heard that the newer Iphones can't be unlocked?

I've also heard of people unlocking them and having problems because it wasn't done right. Trying to figure out if this is something I can/should do myself or pay someone to do it? I just don't want to spend the $ and mess up or have the phone no longer work.

    Any help/input is greatly appreciated.

... ^^^ ... I am NOT an Apple genius ... but I was told that an unlocked phone will re-lock when software updates are uploaded.

So do you have the option to not update or does it automatically do it?

The upgrade only happens if you tell iTunes that you wish to apply the phone upgrade.
What you are more concerned about is a tethered vs. untethered jailbreak.
Tethered jailbreak means if the phone resets (such as a crash or a power off), you have to connect it back to the computer to make it work again.
Untethered means you don't have to worry about this.

    Typically the process is
-Apple releases new version of iOS
-hackers release a tethered jailbreak quickly
-hackers release an untethered jailbreak sometime after depending on complexity
    - you backup phone
    -you update phone
    - you jailbreak phone with untethered jailbreak

    My iPhone 4 is jailbroken

That's called bricking the phone, which can be a pain but there's ways around it by doing a restore and trying again. This situation is rare unless you are doing things wrong.
The jailbreak process is very easy and takes 10 minutes tops.

Go look up how to jailbreak on google.

I've been reading up on it, mostly at Iphonehacks.com. Looked at some youtube vids on it.

So I stopped by a cell repair/buy/sell/trade store today on a whim since I was next door anyway and the tech informed me that an unlocked iphone will be unstable and only run at 2g on a different network. Can anyone confirm or prove this wrong? He did say a "factory unlocked" phone would be fine. He also said if I wanted to do this to get a 3g, the 3gs and up got more unstable as you go up. :notsure: I know people do this but based on his info (if true) I'm better off sticking with one of straight talks phones. Not that I tend to believe what anyone tells me, but he had nothing to sell, he was sold out of any phones. Only thing he could "sell" me was to unlock the phone.

Updated to Mountain Lion earlier, and it wouldn't boot . It keeps looping from restart, to desktop, freezes, back to restart again. Trying to reinstall it and if that doesn't work it's off to the genius bar on saturday

Having had several iPhones, I have never been excited about an iPhone before, but the iPhone 5 has got my attention since it goes to 4G. ... :D

I am going from a 4S to a 5 or 5S next spring/summer if no major problems develop in the 5 ... want to wait a few months after main launch.

My 3G (stolen) & 3GS (AT&T) & 4S (Verizon) have been flawless. Switched carriers (from AT&T to Verizon) therefore got a Verizon 4S last summer.
