Got my rope in. Looks pretty sweet. Looks like I could have easily made it with what I sell at my work though! Oh well.

Remember what we bought was a kinetic recovery rope; not to be confused with a tow rope. I have a tow rope which I paid under 25 bucks with discount. Take a look at climbing ropes, their are static ropes which are used to repel, they have minimal stretch. Then there are your safety ropes which you want to stretch; when you fall. Yes, to an extent we are at the mercy of the vendor, but that's true for a lot of things; then factor in the discount. Did you guys get a couple of the Van "Beast" shackles? It was a real good price for forged steel.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like they are not high quality. The line is extremely nice and the eye splices are great. I just thought it was different line than what I have access to. I can splice double braid no problem.
Well what I'm curious about is if it's 30% stretch @ 100% of the breaking stength or 20% of the breaking strength. Most line manufacturers list the stretch at 20% of the breaking strength.

The double braid nylon line I sell is listed as 6% stretch @ 20%, which would be 30% at it's full breaking strength.

Nothing special to that, it's an inherent quality of double braided nylon rope. If you look up the specs online for bulk rope in the same sizes ASR uses they almost all have the same breaking strength as well. I considered making my own but the discounted price made it close enough to pay the extra to not make my own. Doing a proper eye splice isn't rocket science but it's somewhat involved. If you got the rope really cheaply in bulk and didn't mind spending some time splicing you could easily make them for half their price. You'd also need a fid and pusher, the tools for splicing, and a sturdy place to anchor the loop when pulling it to finalize the eye. Your home made rope won't have the chafe protection of ASR's unless you add that to the job, tho I don't know it's really needed unless you're attaching to rough surfaces that are going to grind on the rope.

I know how to fid and weave, I know how to sew, have a machine, and could buy Cordura. I've done all of these and enjoy them.
I use to make water skiing and boat tiedown ropes for friends.
Still, my time is also worth something.

Overall, I think I'd most likely spend more than ARB's price to make one for myself.
As ARB makes many, they achieve an economy of scale.
I feel the ARB price is very fair.
After all, I want a company to make a profit.

I assume the advertised diameter measurement of the rope is when its stretched? Mine measures close to 1 3/4 and I ordered the 1 1/4.

Rode looks like excellent quality, and couldn't beat the deal.

It should be the relaxed diameter. If you're measuring near the splices then it'll be thicker because part of the rope is jammed inside of itself to make the splice.

Got mine a couple days ago, it's very nicely done.

BTW, as I understand it, a rope is only rode when on a boat and being used for the specific purpose of an anchor attachment line. Not all rope is rode, not all rode is rope. An anchor rode can be rope, rope and chain, all chain, cable, etc. A rope laying on deck for generic use is rope, not rode. Other ropes on and around boats with specific uses are generally called lines; dock line, mooring line, tow line... Free maritime education.
