I am not a gun-nut, nor am I against guns, in fact I plan on buying one soon....but for those who keep using the 2nd Amendment as an argument to "it's my god given right", bullshit...God didn't write the Constitution, man did. And to add to that, those saying "big government" can't take my guns.....News flash...government came up with the 2nd Amendment you cherish so much that gave you the right. I'm not for goverment taking away guns of lawful responsible owners, but that's not what is happening here. it's been exaggerated over and over to the point people are in a frenzy thinking guns are not going to be sold anymore. Like others have said on here, it's just more regulation on obtaining one (ie, longer wait, more background checks, etc).
Like another said here, the 2nd amendment was the right to bear arms when it was muzzle loaders...the tech of the gun has changed and type of gun to bear was bound to change too. If it was the right to bear a bomb back in the day when it was just dynamite, would that mean today i would have the right to bear a bomb if it was nuclear? of course not. I think assault rifles were meant for law enforcement and the military...not for the average home owner or hunter...I mean is your home being robbed by a platoon of men or are you going to empty an extended mag into a deer? BUT I'm not saying they shouldn't be sold to civilians...just to those who meet the requirements as mentioned above.
I'm just trying to make a point. I'm sure others will argue my argument with theirs, and back and forth and so on. So go on and agree or disagree.

So use any argument you want regarding this, just don't pussy out and plea the 2nd amendment.

it would help if you read through all of our responses in the preceding posts, ...largely i've answered this... the gov't didn't create the right to self defense (hint: the founders used the terminology "inalieanble rights")... you really should do some reading before spouting off, ...just saying...

You can just buy the lower receiver and the parts and make your own if there is a ban.

i just corrected your improper statement about "who" was responsible for the language you referenced as drafted by the founders, ...so for starters, i'll consider that putting me on the board :D

The writers of the 2nd amendment understood arms to be muskets and flintlocks. Not AR-15s and AK-47s. There's no proof they would have opposed ownership of said weapons. BUT there's also no proof they would have endorsed them either. We do not know, and will never know. It's a fruitless argument.

However we do know is that the 2nd amendment had to do with states' rights to arm state militias, and not free and unregulated individual possession. It's a matter of historical fact. It's also a matter of historical fact that individual possession of firearms was NEVER unrestricted in the founding father's time. There were many restrictions ... like the requirement to present weapons on a scheduled basis for inspection and recording. And one could also be stripped of their weapons for conduct unbecoming, insubordination or moral failings.

Further, few seem to understand that this open ended view of a 2nd amendment without restriction is very recent, dating only back to the 1970s when the formerly apolitical NRA - a hunting organization that actually supported gun restrictions at the time - was co-opted by political forces for political gain. It has not been a the long view.

It is up to us to define "arms" for ourselves. And a sensible and reasoned society understands the need to balance individual rights with shared responsibilities. It is not threatened by reasonable limits. Whether or not the United States is a sensible and reasoned society, however, is up for debate. Based on a lot of the very selfish comments on this thread, I wonder. But the truth is none of us are entitled to everything we want. Sorry if your mom and dad taught you differently, but the real world doesn't work that way. Neither can a UNITED States. All this fear and paranoia is it's own self fulfilling prophecy. Time to rein it in.

    It wont happen.

And the thought of someone coming to take my guns, well guess what? It wont happen. Good luck. Bring an army. You would be better off just dropping a JDAM on my house.

Who is taking your guns? Seriously why do people keep regressing to thinking they're going to go out in some epic fire fight when the government comes to take their guns. No one is confiscating your guns for fucks sake.

/my participation in these close minded gun discussions

x2 they are NOT going to come for them. and if they did they would have to go to every house in the hole US to find them all. since some states you don’t have to register guns.

Yeah....GOOD LUCK going to peoples homes and taking their guns. There will be hell to pay and certain citizens will fight back with force. It wouldn't be pretty.

There would be more shootings, protests, lawsuits and ...god knows what else... if they even tried to do that.

Funny... My hair dresser who obviously doesn't understand the thrill of owning & shooting guns for hobbyist (and/or self defense) purposes ....Had said, "Why do you need an assault rifle anyway?"
And I replied (knowing, it could get ugly and she might f'up my haircut - LOL)
I said, "They're fun to shoot. We have one"
And I spent my time trying to tell her that criminals will always have access to guns, weapons, drugs and everything that was ever illegal in this country.

Creating new laws against legal & responsible gun owners will only PROTECT the criminals - as they'll have less people to prevent them from criminal acts.

I also live in a state that is going to be directly effected by all of these new laws and what not. And I am pro- gun, tho I will admit that is it stupid easy to buy long guns in NYS. As long as u have a green card or a citizen and were never convicted of a Felony it takes 15 minuets. Gun show in NY r even worse. I just hate it when these jack ass Legislators come up with stupid and pointless laws cause they think a specific fire arm is dangerous cause it comes in a black color. There will always be sick and deranged people out there, making more pointless laws dosnt help the situation.

For the people say this amendment was written when flintlocks and muzzleloaders were the only guns so our new technology doesn't apply...

The founding fathers wanted us to be able to protect ourselves from the government. So it doesn't matter how absurd you think it is for a citizen to own a certain type of gun. If the military has it a citizen should have the right to own it. You can fight back using spit balls. The playing field has to be level. That's why they said "shall NOT be infringed" they didn't want any kind of limit on what citizens could have.

I surely hope so.... Anti-gun or not, I think both parties can agree that we need more protection in/around our schools.

I had just sent a letter to our governor (which, I doubt it'll get read) - that I think they need to implement a Volunteer School Patrol program where community volunteers would patrol the OUTSIDE of the school property looking for suspicious activity. No guns needed....just a cell phone. Maybe they could get local funds from businesses to help train these Patrol people in self defense (non gun related) and how to recognize warning signs of suspicious activity. This is something they could implement almost immediately without the red tape (of trying to 'arm' these volunteers).

And even patrol the Amish & other school properties as well. It's all in what the community wants to protect & what they dictate.

^ 100% agreed. Tho irrelevant of any opinion here, I think the bigger problem were all going to face is what's kind of ridiculous bull $h!+ laws that's a$$ clown who has been put in charge of this panel is going to conjure up.

I like what the NRA said. The best defense for a bad person with a gun,is a good person with a gun. Something like that.
