so we should equip the us military with glock 9mm instead of m-4s and variants? it would be a lot cheaper.

Yes because a majority of homicides occur at 300 meter or more . The Cont shooter shot at point blank... I feel bad typing this but, a Glock would have been easier for him...

None yet, but its about to get rolling.
You act like events like this wouldnt happen without guns. Man, crazy people are going to do these types of things regardless which guns are legal and which arent. The worst school massacre in history was with a bomb. The VT shooter could have gotten an AR just like he got his other guns.

People always want a scapegoat and for this one its "ARs". Lets not blame the guy who did it.

No, I was just trying to shed light on why people/media are creating all this hoopla about them. And that regulating them could make it more difficult (even if just a little) to get them.

I own my share of guns, including the "scary" kind (the less scary CA versions), and am not advocating taking away 2nd amendment rights.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
    Ok. So hypotheticaly speaking...

Let's say that there is a ban imposed upon all semi automatic rifles that are capable of holding more than five rounds, magazines larger than five rounds, and Red Rider BB guns.

Two weeks - days - months go by and someone else murders someone, then steals some weapons from them and kills a few dozen citizens. What now? We have made it impossible to legally attain above said items, yet the problem persists. What is the next step to the equation?

I consider myself to be a firearms enthusiast. I own several guns. That said, I have no desire to own an AR15 but I also have no problem with fellow citizens owning them. My best friend has 9 of them. Round count doesn't matter to me either, hell I think drum mags are badass...just not my style.

Personally I feel that a Ban on popular weapons will just increase crime. Mainly illegal weapons transactions, turning former law abiding citizens into criminals with the stroke of a pen. ARs and AKs are not going anywhere folks. Don't kid yourselves, they are here to stay - illegal or not.

Veterans and patriots use the phrase "Freedom isn't free.". They are right, only this time civilians paid the ultimate price.

After reading all these posts, yes criminals will still be able to find and get guns but by putting a ban on assault rifles, automatics, and other Highpower guns other than what is traditionally used for hunting, you would make it much harder to get ahold of those types of guns, making them harder to find thus reducing the numbers on the street. It won't stop gun related murders from all the guns I mentioned but it would reduce their numbers on the street.
If you were to remove speed limits and and make all drugs legal, the number of people speeding and taking drugs would increase. I just believe that by banning certain guns you can reduce the number of incidents that occur thus saving lives.
Am I wrong to think that less guns on the street will equal less deaths? or will the remaining legal gun owners go on killing sprees because the number of deaths are down?
Criminals and psychos are always going to find a way to get guns, we just need to do what we can to reduce the number available.
The Anders Breivik's of the world will still be out there but take the guns out of the hands of the gang bangers and you might save a few people. Just my two cents.

Problem is we have had a assault weapons ban and it didn't do anything.

Plus we still Mexico south of us and that place is just oozing with automatic weapons. Easily be able to get one from there

How is quantity not the issue? I used the speed limit and drug reference to illustrate the fact that if speeding and drug use were legal there would be more of both just like less guns equal less gun related crime...

This, the lady who introduced the original AWB barely got it passed because the statistics showed that the amount of " assault weapons" used in crime is very minute.

In fact to pass the AWB she had to tack it on to the crime bill of 1993.

quantity is not the issue because it's not 1,000 guns that go out and kill people, it's 1,000 messed up people.

Is there no effort so far to help with mental issues? I'm a little concerned that that issue hasn't really been addressed by the government extensively...

I agree a lot with Ben's argument. Carry on...

Are you referring to an outright ban on guns in general or on "assault" weapons? If you're speaking a general ban on ALL firearms than I agree completely that we need to further control rather than ban.

I think by in large most will agree a ban on all guns is not the answer nor is it realistically being suggested by most.

I do have a question, and I will admit my ignorance to firearms (thus I'm sure most of you will discount anything I've posted in these threads since teh CT incident lol) but from my understanding both here and from buddies with extensive firearm training fully auto rifles have generally been illegal for years with the exception of strictly regulated licenses.) It seems that an AR15 can fairly easily be converted to, atleast simulate close to a fully automatic rifle (or at least several round bursts). If someone were to aftermarket equip an AR15 with such a mod, is it still legal? Not putting an opinion one way or the other whether these should be legal, just an honest question as to whether you can convert a rifle to fire in a way which an otherwise stock rifle would be illegal if it performed the same with no mods.

it would not be legal because the serial number is for a semi-automatic weapon, they would have to have a m-16 marked lower.

No, there are laws against manufacturing "easily convertible" guns that are easily turned full auto. For instance, ar15 receivers are machined so as to not accept certain full auto parts. Other guns had to be redesigned or manufacture even ceased, such as with some open-bolt semi-autos, because they could be converted.
