...suspect it is a technique kind of a situation..I was warned by Martyn to keep the poles as close to the truck/Habitat body during the open and close-up as I could. sorry that happened..you'll probably prevent that in the future. but then maybe it was just a part fail.

Mine looks like the ends were machined from a brass rod. Do you guys have steel instead?

Also, I open mine up from the inside pushing on the platform, then I throw my recovery bag w/ straps, snatch block, shackles, etc (about 25 lbs) into the end of the platform and it brings the tent down to a point that I can pop the rods in w/o any problem. I leave the bag in there until I'm ready to sleep. TBH the gas struts can support my weight w/o the added support stays.

It's very possible, I'm definitely not saying there's no way I did it. I didn't think I put any/much outward leverage on them, but with the poles together i'm sure there is a lot of leverage at the tip. I'll definitely be WAY more careful in the future now that I know this is possible. But again... didn't think my form was THAT bad.

If you push from the inside, are the gas struts strong enough that it won't SLAM down and damage anything? I tried to keep the whole process pretty slow using the extended rod lowering down slowly.

I was told the same thing. If you walk away from the truck with it, snap city.

Well, if you use your poles to open, you have to stay perfectly perpendicular. if you're applying force at an angle, then you're simply applying a lateral force that essentially pries the support poles off the stud.

And yes, it won't slam down on anything.

I just headed out to the parking lot to let the co-workers check it out. I opened with the rods again and yeah, i can see it doesn't take much to angle them to the max. I'll try opening from the inside next time I set it up.

I appreciate everyone's input! Hopefully it'll be an easy/cheap fix and I won't have it happen again.

I feel stupid I never even thought to just push it open from inside, saves even more time from the hassle of having to attach the poles together.

The rods/struts don't support your weight. The cantilever is supported at the hinges. The rods keep the tent from folding up, with you in it, when a heavy gust of wind hits.

Huh, I was told by Martyn while getting installed that the poles are the primary weight supports when open.

Opening and closing of the top is facilitated by robust gas springs. The bed platform is supported by two aluminum rods and is rated for 600lbs.
