my auto rolls back when on a hill, in Drive and not on the brakes... the traction control kicks in and makes a racket.

Is this normal for these trucks? Don't mind if it is, just want to me sure... My old 4Runner used to sit in D without the brakes no problem so it caught me off guard today!

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
yes, the off roads and pros do not have hill assist

basically it uses the abs as a shitty half ass version of hill start assist. it makes the same noise when using MTS.

Yeah I get that too...only on dirt/gravel roads though. It hasn't ever happened on pavement for me

My Off Road does the same thing when rolling back. It tries to stop itself from rolling back while in drive.

Huh? They most certainly do have hill start assist.

Please reference page 27 in the 2017 Tacoma eBrochure.
    http://www.toyota.com/content/ebrochure/2017/tacoma_ebrochure.pdf

How else would you actuate a "hill start assist" other than the braking system?

FWIW, my mom has a Lexus GX and it does exactly the same thing.

Yes. My OR does the same thing. I believe the manual refers to this as a hill start assist. Makes a helluva racket.

the noise makes sense, seems odd that my 99 4Runner happily sat on a hill in drive without rolling back and this won't... but weird or not, if it's normal for these trucks I'll use the brake more often

    Thanks again folks

Mine does it too if I shift from R to Drive and hit the gas the TC kicks in, if you wait for the transmission a couple more seconds to engage it wont roll back and kick into traction control. Remember foot is on the brake after you shift. My 2nd gen did the same thing.

Well it seems weird but I have the opposite experience, I have a 2016 TRD OR and have stop many times on steep and not so steep hills and does not roll back at all ( Holds Steady)and takes off nice and smooth.
