So I am looking at the crazy used Tacoma market and like others have noticed that used Tacoma prices are not THAT much less than new prices.

So at what point would a new Taco be worth it to you vs. one being sold at a dealer (certified) that is 2-3 years old with ~30k

Not that black and white... Also, keep in mind Toyota's certified preowned warranty. At one point, when my truck only had about 35k miles on it and my warranty was running out, I seriously considered trading for a similar year/model just so I'd have that warranty protection.

That being said, within 10%, I'd probably spring for the new one. Usually financing and incentives are better on a new vehicle also.

I only said "certified" to assume that the dealer had put the necessary work into the new truck i.e. new tires if needed, brakes etc. Not one of those shady dealers that takes a truck in and doesn't touch it before selling it.

Thanks OZ...I did have a little unexpected $ come my way, but that doesn't mean I need to spend all or most of it just to get new.

    ..or does it?

Yeah no kidding, I have especially seen non-toyota dealers selling used tacos for 2k more than new msrp. What are they thinking?

Ha got ya man, that's probably what I will end up doing too. Getting the $1000 for college grad is also a nice bonus

You have more negotiating room with used inventory. The nice thing about certified pre owned is even if the vehicle is past 3yr/36k you get a 12month/12k mile comprehensive warranty plus the remainder of the powertrain warranty. You also have the option to buy an extended warranty through Toyota Financial and current financing rates apply as well.

    It's not all about cost.

There is a *much* bigger selection among new vehicles.

So, if you just want e.g. an SR5 PreRunner access cab, you can probably find one used.

Similarly, a TRD Offroad with V6 and auto - that's pretty common, but you won't get to pick your color.

Bit if you want a less common configuration (e.g. reg cab 4x4, TRD Sport w/6speed, Double-Cab-LongBed, or you want to pick a specific color, you either need to buy new, or wait on the used market and *hope* that the seller is asking a reasonable price, because sometimes, as you know, sellers will ask an unrealistic price, and from a buyer's perspective, that truck might as well not even be on the market at all.

In 2010 I bought my used 07 Taco with 32,000 km's on it. I got a good deal on pricing though. But now kinda wishing I had bought a new 2010, I want the bluetooth stereo features :(

I definitely understand what you're saying. Ideally I would like a 4x4 Double Cab Long-Bed TRD Sport in Baracelona Red. The only used ones I have found have been in silver streak or magnetic grey. I could compromise and buy one of those, but I would hate to be kicking myself in a year or two for not spending the extra 10 percent to get what I REALLY want

    Too few to list.
Usually the interest rates for new is a lower than a used one making monthly payments pretty close to each other. Sometimes, even zero % interest on new.

    This.

For me when I was looking, the used Tacoma's I were looking at were no less than $21-$22k at the time vs the $28k or so they wanted new for the new truck I got. I just couldn't see spending over 20k for a used vehicle when the new one was less than 10k more. Obviously it comes down to what you can afford naturally.

New NEVER makes financial sense, because motor vehicles are depreciating assets with maintenance costs. They cannot make you money.

New ONLY makes sense when an advantage not offered by another option carries enough subjective value to the buyer.
