For a 2017 TRD Off Road, if considering going to larger tires in the future, at what point is it wise to re-gear?

Just put the money aside and wait till you increase the tire size. Do it all at once. If you do it now you will be riding high rpm

Thanks folks...forgive my ignorance, but why is the 285 tire the time to re-gear, and what gears/ratio is best when it is done...assuming I worked my ass off in overtime and money was no issue to get it done right.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
Check the tire calculator on the page. Has a whole listing of ranges.

    I'm going from 265 to 315, and I'm going to go 4.88.

Tire height is the % of the width. Most people here run 285/70 or 75s which is 33s or something

285/75/16 is 33" on 16 inch wheel and regear to 4.10

    315/75/16 is 35" and regear to 4.56

    Please be logical dude.

75% of 285mm is 213.75mm. Which converts to 8.415 inches (sidewall).

    Since you have 2 sidewalls, 8.415 x2 is 16.83"
Since you have 1 wheel, add 16.63" to 17" = 33.83" tire height.

You don't "have" to regear with 33s. I'd recommend waiting a while to see if you can live with the way it drives. The need to regear varies from driver to driver. If you have the auto it will be a bit worse. For me 32s with the MTs 4.3 ratio is fine. Noticeably more sluggish than stock, until I actually get on it, and then it feels fine. If you do, 4.88s are probably best if you want it to be noticeable. I may be wrong but last I checked they were the only option. If the 4.10 is available it would seem pointless since the manuals already come with a 4.3 and I wouldn't want anything taller with my 32s. If 4.56 is available it would be such a marginal change from the 4.3s that I personally wouldn't feel like it's worth the cash.

Why would you have to regear on 285's I know plenty of guys running 285s without having to regear. Anything above a 33'' tire I would definitely regear.

You don't have to regear, but if you want the same power back as stock then you have to regear. Also less strain on the drive train.

Agreed, understand that, both my lifted 2nd gens were fine on stock gearing and 285s, I would think anything less than a 33'' even on the 3rd gen would be fine.
