For me, it would be when the truck becomes too frustrating to deal with and the negatives outweigh the positives. I bought my 1st gen brand new Sept of 1997 (It's a '98 TRD xcab) and I'm still enjoying it with about 285K miles so far with the 25 year anniversary coming up next month. I've taken care of it and reinvested in it, though. I had saved for a new truck but after researching the 3rd gens and taking into consideration how much I've done to mine over the years, I came to the conclusion that I could spend half of what a brand new truck costs to refurbish mine and add a full wedge camper build-out to it, and end up with a fully built, self-contained adventure truck vs. a stock truck needing $$ mods to even come close to what I have. Add to that the differences between 1st gen and 3rd gen and for me personally, I think it's a better truck. If it lasts me another 8-10 years I will be beyond satisfied and happy.

I bought the tires the truck came along for another $100.00 .

I should change the oil but only gas is all the money I spent so far.

    Very good answer !!

Sometimes it can be a very simple easy to repair problem.

Like a Clutch slave cylinder with a minor leak. Dumped fluid in and drove it home it took a few pumps each time but nothing impossible . The shop told the owner it needed a $700.00 clutch replacement.

I don’t see me selling mine. I bought mine about 6 years ago for $5k. It had around 170k miles and was mostly stock. Since then I lifted, tires, regeared, arb rear locker, bumper, winch, and little things that it needed. Two years ago it blew head gasket (2nd time. 1st with me, other with previous owner) so I decided to replace the engine. Got a engine from Yota1 and replaced clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, radiator, hoses, belt, motor mounts, and more. That was at 195k miles. All that was around $5k. I did EVERYTHING on this truck myself. Including engine swap and the regearing. I’ve got way more into the truck than I paid for it and at this point it’s more than just a truck to me. It’s a lot of time, money, joy, aggravation, and pride with it. The fact that I know I can fix everything on it myself is important too. The only thing major that’s still stock is the transmission and transfer case. I live in the south so frame rot isn’t an issue.

I guess to answer the question in short answer is…never. In my case anyway.

    NOPE. DIY BABY!

NAH! TIME FOR A NEW STICK WELDER!

    MILEAGE IS IRRELEVANT

NOPE. FIX THE ISSUE, REPLACE MOTOR IF RINGS ARE BAD.

UHHH...NOPE! TIRES COST THAT MUCH! A NEW USED TRUCK COSTS MORE.

Edited to add Worse case for me is that I buy another 1st Gen and use the old one for parts. Same for any of my other vehicles. Toyotas, BTW.

I don't think I ever will. A damaged engine would just get replaced or fixed. Same with transmission. Suspension and stuff is so easy to maintain and replace. I think if it was seriously totaled then I'd give up on it. Otherwise, these things are classic to me and so worth keeping around.
