    Synopsis:
Input shaft started squeaking, Toyota replaced transmission and clutch under warranty.

Yesterday, re-attaching skid plate, notice fluid on underside of tranny. Followed fluid up to see residue on the back of the motor where the transmission mates up. It's red. Manual transmission fluid isn't read. Neither is gear oil.
Called Toyota to make an appointment. Asked why fluid was red, "Sometimes ATF is better for the synchros than the MTF or Gear oil".

    Thoughts?

That sounds like bullshit to me. If ATF was better- Then it'd just be TF and it'd go in all of them.

Either way they need to fix the leak....Any problems with driving it??

Recently, there's a small lurch when I start going. I'd assume it's low on fluid, since the motor mounts look good and I can feel it move in the shifter.

That does not sound right. These stories are why I am not trusting the maintenance of my truck to the "Toyota Expert Technicians"

I never really asked questions after they replaced the entire thing because it was working fine, and the initial problem was solved.
But I'll be on their ass about putting in the fluid I want this time. Redline 75w90 prease.

My old S-10 used Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (GM P/N 12345349) which was essentially ATF in the manual transmission. So the dealer wasn't 100% wrong that some manuals do indeed call for ATF.

This doesn't excuse the dealer in this case....just food for thought!

Why is there always someone posting rational points when we are in our "burn the dealer at the stake" mood

You should've asked him...... "SHOW ME IN THE MANUAL where it states to use ATF in my MANUAL transmission"

Ford uses ATF in most of their transmissions, Auto or Manual. Check the owners manual and see what it says, I would go by the manual.

I agree this is a screw up....If ATF was meant to be in the manual tranny, then it would say so in the book....

FWIW, My Dodge 2500 6 speed takes ATF also.....So does the transfercase.

I've got an appointment Monday morning, so I'll voice my concerns and requests then (fix leak/lurch, refill with Redline + rental car).

I know Chrysler ran ATF in some of their manuals. I think somebody boobooed at Toyota.
