Zombie runner is dead on. I am doing the process as i write this. I am building a SBR for the gf and just bought an AAC M4-2000 for my rifle. The gun store wont even let you take posession of a suppressor until the paper work is done. As for the SBR if you get caught with anything shorter than 16 inches on your lower with no paper work you are fucked. Paper work for both!

Im not sure if a Class III smith has to install the sear or not, but it does have to be registered to one gun.

And yes, even the sear has to be confirmed built before 1986, just the sear will be $6-8k

Whoa, completely incorrect (as others have said). The GSG in the photo needs 2 NFA stamps, which means $400. Trust us guys who have done it.

The vertical forend grip isn't an issue for rifles or SBRs, but you cannot add a vertical forend grip to a pistol without registering it as an AOW.

My SBR is currently waiting for the BATFE to approve its suppressor. Can't wait!

Then go ask him. If he's a Class 3 SOT he'll set you straight. If he's just a Type 1 FFL he probably doesn't know or need to know. Lots of FFL holders are pretty clueless about how NFA stuff works.

Good luck with the build. I have three suppressors, they are a ton of fun.

The worst part is waiting on ATF to approve your paperwork.

Ok, thanks for the info! Looks like I will need two stamps. I knew I needed one for the suppressor, but I was unsure if one tax stamp covered an entire gun or just the suppressor. There was some disagreement there, but I plan on using this suppressor on a P22 as well (future purchase), so having a stamp just for the suppressor to put on any weapon is a good idea.

I think my plan is to purchase the GSG and apply for the suppressor. I know it'll take time, but I also have my concealed carry permit, so maybe that will speed things up (since I'm already in the system).

My next question is how to register it as an SBR or AOW. I guess AOW is correct since I'm just adding a butt-stock to a pistol? I have read stuff about getting the lower engraved, etc...but does that mean I have to send the weapon off? Or does that not apply in this situation?

I already own a gun safe, but I may need to get a bigger one If I keep buying guns!

So if I were to build an AK out of a flat, and then throw a full auto trigger group in it, then there would be no way to make it legal?

if the firearm comes from the factory as an SBR then it does not have to be engraved since it is already built as an SBR.

having it engraved with your information is only needed when you buy a incomplete rifle and put it together yourself. for AR's this would mean have the stripped lower reciever engraved with your name and city and state, since you would be the "builder" of the rifle.

Does that rule also apply to FA? I was under the impression that FA was handled a little differently than all the other exceptions, and therefore had it's own set of rules.

Also I was under the impression that if you built a rifle as an amature gunsmith that you wouldn't need to serialize or engrave it for personal use.__

No clue on the FA stuff. I havent read into any of that.

for SBR's they must be engraved if you are starting from a stripped lower.

I went the trust route (used the will maker program) because my CLEO is a douche and I have a spotted record). I had it signed by a notary and I was GTG. Now, this may (and probably does) vary by state but here in Az, I don't need to register my trust with the state and I don't have to pay any yearly fees.

If you register it as an AOW you CAN NOT put a stock on it or else it will be considered an SBR. If the weapon you are planning on buying has a folding stock you can just register it as an SBR. You have to register it as one or the other. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

IIRC, if you are a class III dealer, you can make FA weapons for display or something. But for a regular Joe, as I understand it, it's just a different form, (not sure if it's a stamp or what the fee is if any) and the FA weapon would need to be built prior to 1986.
