No solid information yet, but hopefully soon.

Getting real tired of the arm chair engineer's downplaying the new engine (that they know nothing about) for the simple fact that it is 0.5L smaller than the current 4.0L.

We should probably wait to see the specs on the engine and it's capabilities at the very least before we start bashing it.

I know a bit about it

it is dual VVti and for cruise speed they let the intake valves stay open longer during the initial compression, which shortens the compression stroke. Proven tech, not new to Toyota whatsoever, as Prius and other all have this.

the atkinson cycle here is done via dual VVTi intake and exhaust valving timing. fake atkinson cycle,
extremely reliable way to increase mpg and deliver power when needed, more mpg at cruising...
no need for cylinder deactivation...it is all about scavenging intake and exhaust pressure with vvti

Don't know a thing officially but I can make some assumptions based on what I know of Direct injection engines in general. Any loss in HP or torque due to the loss of 30cubic inches will be more than made up for by the increase in compression and timing allowed by direct injection.

I'm going to sit back and wait but I'm guessing right at the 280hp mark with torque right around the same or a little more. There's also going to be a6 speed auto to get you moving so that will help a lot.

That is very interesting: and what you think about having two set of injectors? will they fire at the same time when needed? that would be awsome.

Good reminder. This technology has been used by Toyota and others for years already. Toyota does not put a New engine technology in Tacomas. They are just put in technology that is, New to the Tacoma.

If you look at peformers numbers on many cars, autos are equal to or superior to the manual transmission. At least initially, tha seems to be more important then being a selling point for a minority of buyers.

Just check the specification of the gs450h 3.5l atkinson d4s engine.
This is probably the engine that will be in the 2016 tacoma.

    the spec: 286 hp @ 6,000 rpm; 254 lb ft @ 4,600 rpm

    +1

One of the primary reasons I am still interested in the Taco is because it will have a manual.

Just lookat the lexus rx 350 ( 275hp @ 6200 and curb weight of 4178lbs and 0-60 in 7.0 sec)
The 2015 tacoma 4dors long box curb weight is 4220lbs.

So if the new tacoma weight is close to the 2015, with 10 more hp and torque at 200 rpm lower than the rx 350 engine, the performance will be good.

And for myself having a rav4 v6 I can tell you that those engine have a very good powerband.

    Just a think!!
