Has anyone tried taking off the tie downs and fitting some chain through the tie down anchors?

In rock climbing a lot of times we put chains on the anchors. The chains are nice since it gives lots of places to put carabiners in.

Anyone tried it? I’m wondering would the chains make annoying noises when not in use?

Almost certainly they'd make annoying noises, and scratch your bed all to hell.

Other people just do something like this:
    https://www.uscargocontrol.com/96-A...sUW5hVF4T5MKoS0Q9Zt4MctAuyvApmhhoC8dsQAvD_BwE

I'm too cheap for that, so I just bolted a series of D rings to the floor of the bed.

I do have a plastic bed protector so scratching isn’t a concern at least. I do need something in the bed I can hook a lock (maybe a u lock) through so I can lock up my mountain bike while driving to the trail. Yes someone would steal a bike out the back of my bed around here (and no the cops wouldn’t care).

I use the carabiner clips found at The Home Depot and a chain.

Go for it Turn the Radio Up wear Ear Plugs.

How bad can it be gotta keep your bike secure from casual bike stealers .

bolt cutters cut the hardest chains like butter or a cordless grinder with a Dog Cutter.

Girth hitch a nylon daisy chain to them. Kinda the same functionally without the noise.

I put 4 links of chain on one of the tie down points. Super easy. Got me out mountain biking today at least. I haven’t driven with the chain not in use. I’ll see if it’s annoying over time. If it isn’t annoying I’ll add chain to the other corners for my dirt bike

I thought about that. It’d be good for noise. The problem is thieves could cut the nylon and get the dirt bike. Probably safe enough to not get the bike jacked at a stop light. Probably not safe enough to keep the bike safe while getting gas or whatever.

I thought the chains were just for extra options to attach carabiners. I’m not sure I understand that you are locking your dirt bike to them.

Yeah it’s for both. More options to attach carabiners to, and a way to lock up a mountain bike (and maybe sometimes a dirt bike)

Not since Hunts Point in the early seventies did I hear people are stealing out the back of pick up trucks at stoplights

Going to be noisy. For me, it'd drive me nuts.

This is what I have. I installed two d-rings in the front bed bolts. I don't use the chains often, but the turnbuckles keep them taut so no real noise (especially so with a bed mat). I only have then in place when I need them because I don't want them to wear into the wheel wells. A couple of short lengths of garden hose would fix that though.

Last week in San Francisco someone in a car jumped out and broke the back glass of a car and stole $7000 in camera gear from the driver who was in the car. Broad daylight during rush hour at a busy intersection.

Thieves around here wouldn’t hesitate to take a Santa Cruz bike that’s unlocked. Nonviolent crime here seems to go largely unchecked.

I saw this on the news a few days ago and was shocked at the audacity & boldness of those criminals doing that in traffic. I wonder what would have happened if the owners were armed?
