Side cam too, it's easy to go through the door. Do Tacoma alarms sound when broken into? I can't remember, but I think only the panic button on the fob sounds the alarm. If the Tacoma has power locks like a Lexus the alarm will sound if not, I think it's only a immobilization device.

Glad nothing was stolen from you and that you actually got some usable info about these wannabe thieves. I agree with others that this info should be turned over to LEOs...could be useful in other cases or in the future.

Future reference? Fuck that. You have the pics, the plate and he (it?) clearly tried to break into your truck?

Have the cops tell you no they cant arrest. That's their job.

Yes, that is what I’m thinking. So these are useful for gaining access but could they actually start the truck without a fob??

Makes me wonder just how much trouble it would be to relocate the wiring and stuff that they were going for with the hook. They obviously know the factory location, maybe just moving it a bit out of the way would be worthwhile.

Agreed. I’m just trying to understand what exactly they were trying to do. Did they disconnect the horn on purpose so that the alarm would not sound when they opened the hood (not knowing that there is a second horn), but then why break the hood sensor wire (which is what triggered the alarm) instead of just trying to pop the hood?

The hood release cable is very protected on our Tacoma’s. I don’t see how they could have popped it with a long screwdriver or pull the cable with something hooked.

To be honest, I didn't know I had an alarm. It wasn't on my paperwork and I don't have the stickers on the windows. I was actually surprised to hear the alarm on the dash cam video when the hood sensor wires were cut. Do all Tacomas have a basic alarm system that detects when the door and hood sensors are tripped when the doors are locked?

I got a thread dedicated to dash cams. I've used over 60 dash cams and review them on YouTube. I used the f770 also until recently I got the newer f800. Check out my thread here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/dash-cam-reviews.445879/page-6#post-16420280

They disconnect the horn, they then attempted to rip the hood switch out so make sure the alarm wasnt going to go off. However these trucks and other cars have an auxiliary horn/siren that the alarm uses. They rip the hood pin out to see if it sets the alarm off and if it’s actually audible.the scanner they had could allow them to do a few things. It could just be a code hopper and will get them keyless access to unlock the vehicle. But if that was the key more than likely they wouldn’t of needed to try to disable your alarm. As once they got the keyless codes, it would disable the alarm upon unlocking. So my guess is scanner would of been able to break the key encryption and they were going to steal your truck.

Either way they were malicious. They caused damage and I would tell the police you want to press charges. That way they can atleast go after them for distruction of property, vandalism or something. Doubt they could actually charge them with burglary. Hopefully they can find and charge these scumbags. I’m sure if not in your case, they can atleast tie them to some others in the area.

I filed the official report today with the Glendora PD. They suspect that the would be thieves were not from the area and sure enough, a friend ran the plate and it came up in Long Beach. Gang bangers for sure. My hope is they can use the information to help solve other cases.
