I've been thinking about a dash cam, mostly for when parked at remote trail heads, but I'm a little concerned that they may break in just to take the camera.

I like that you have a visual record of what happened during this event.

I was thinking of getting some small warning labels with something like "If you are reading this you have been filmed". I like that the new cameras can send recordings to the cloud so if the vehicle is stolen you still have a record of what happened and hopefully images of the thieves.

I saw these... but I'm not sure I want to draw attention to the camera.

Thinkware has smartphone apps that allow you to completely mute the voices and beeps. Really useful when you're off-roading and don't want to here beeping every time you hit a bump. http://www.thinkware.com/Products/AppandSoftware/MobileViewer

I like how people go nuts on a photo and think people will get arrested.

There is no proof in the photos the guys did anything but drive by and walk by the vehicle.
I don’t see anyone physically touching the vehicle.

Highly doubtfull (unless there is a full video with more) the cops do anything with the footage. Nothing they can do unless they actually take something and or steal the car on camera.

You can’t just snap a photo of someone, accuse them of doing something and the cops get an arrest warrant.

OP sorry you had someone attempt to steal your truck. Theives suck!

Completely understand, but these are just screen grabs from the videos that show the car pull up, two individuals messing with the front of my truck followed by the alarm sounding, the same vehicle departing immediately thereafter. The physical evidence is the broken wire and disconnected horn. The pic is for identification purposes of the guy and his vehicle. Its the same as when the news shows a picture of someone suspected of a crime. Often times they show only an image of the person from a video and not the actual crime. The GPD has all the information they need.

It is more than likely that these guys were up to no good. If the plates or image of the person help the GPD identify or solve another crime and take these guys off the streets, then I am happy with that.

Sorry about your truck Rich. ! Glad no real damage occurred..!

Hope the cops now have them "in their radar"...!! They will get caught sooner or later, I'm sure.....

Sorry to hear about your incident with the would be criminals Rich. Could have been much more serious so glad your truck wasnt taken.

I cant say enough good things about having these dash cams your vehicles. The best feature is the parking mode recording. I guess it wont help if someone steals the dash cam, but for the casual someone hitting your car or vandalizing it, that would be good evidence for the PD to arrest and prosecute. I have a similar model to the Thinkware. I have the Blacksys CH100B in my wifes car and the Blacksys CH200 for my truck. Both record front and rear, but the CH200 is newer so it has additional features and both cams are full HD. The price was a little cheaper for the Blacksys models from blackboxmycar.com, but the iphone app seemed more intuitive so that is why I decided on that one. I have already referred back to the videos several times already for minor traffic issues, but worth having it IMHO.

Someone else posted a thread with a great description and pics of the Thinkware F770 install. If you search for F770 I'm sure can find it.

BTW, I forgot to mention that we got fingerprints! The idiot put his face and right hand up against the passenger side window to peer through my tinted windows. Got three fingers (and a nose and forehead!). Complete buffoons!

Damn this thread is a great commercial for these dash cams! You sure those guys in the Kia don't work for Thinkware? It is a Korean company afterall :D

It got me looking into these cams now...

They are. 80 bit encryption takes a while to crack but it’s been out a while now, and thieves have caught on. just about any encryption can be cracked, just some take a lot longer than others.

I install remote starts for a living, which is basically like hot wiring a vehicle. It took ADS about 2 years to crack all the Toyota 80 bit let encryption codes. They ran a computer 24/7 to do it. This is a company that main objective is to crack these codes to be able to interface into these systems. So it’s not something your average car thief can do in his basement overnight. However there are teams (rings) of people that work on this stuff daily. Once they find a way or figure it out, they sell it on the black market and that’s when your average car thieves get their hands on these tools and data.

I haven't actually checked my own night time videos, but the samples provided on Thinkware's website look really good.
