Question about your dash cam setup.... do you need to buy the Celllink external battery in order for the camera to record when the vehicle is not running (like during break-ins)? Or is it just hard wired to your truck?

I don’t have the Celllink. Without the Celllink my camera will record motion for up to 8 hours or if it detects a drop in voltage to ensure it does not drain the battery. I think the Celllink allows the camera to operate longer without affecting the car battery.

There are only three wires to hook up. One goes to the empty hot fuse plug under the dash, the second goes to an Acc fuse, and the third is a ground. It is very easy to install.

I think having a small sticker on the windows simply stating:

    DASH - CAM
    RECORDING

would be a great deterrent. Thieves will likely move on to another car if they thought they were being filmed. You don't even need to have a camera. The crooks would never know!

If there is enough interest I will add these to my store.

if they were already gonna break in, wouldn't that just motivate them to break in more so they can steal the dashcam?

Nope. New ones record to the cloud so they will already be recorded and the owner notified before they even break in.

Agreed, but I'd rather have them see the warning and move on to another vehicle rather than them damaging my vehicle and me getting a good image of them.

And besides, you'd have to be either a really stupid thief, and very confident in your ability to break into a vehicle if you knew there was an onboard camera filming you before you even got in. I'd bet that most would simply move on.

which dash cameras are you talking about? Blackvue offers blackvue cloud but as far as I see, they only offer cloud back up, it does not record to the cloud automatically. That would destroy your cellular/internet bandwidth uploading constant 1080p30 or 1080p60 (with the new blackvue dr750s-2ch) footage. You would be uploading tens of GB a day over a wireless connection. You can have it set to notify you when it senses an impact, maybe even motion, but you would still have to connect to the app after receiving the notification and manually back it up.

I just set up the thinkware f800 pro, another top of the line high end camera and it does not even offer live feed monitoring over the cloud.

I have never heard of any dash cams that record to the cloud, only cams that allow you to get notifications, view, or manually back up video but as far as I see none automatically back up any footage. https://www.blackvue.com/blackvue-over-the-cloud/ blackvue seems to be the industry leader in cloud dash cams and they don't even do what you are talking about.

You are correct. I read about ThinkwareCloud and thought that it included saving to the cloud but I realize now after reading more about it that it does what the Backvue does. Oh well, maybe someday!

If you put in a network or wired camera as a dashcam and have a remote recorder safely locked somewhere else in your truck, you wouldn’t have to worry about the dash cam being stolen along with its recording files on the card.

Unless they steal the whole truck.

Of course that’s a bigger problem.

You need a sign that reads: "If you can read this sign, your image has been captured and downloaded to the internet".
Not sure how that would work legally though.

That may stop them or piss them off ... who knows ... you can't stop everybody ... but, you can push back some people from doing bad things.

most network or other security cameras aren't designed for car use though and being able to stay powered on for long periods of time isn't something those kind of cameras typically have to worry about.

With mods they can- I’ve moded Supercircuits security cameras to run on 12v to monitor wildlife for weeks before. I even set up remote monitoring from miles away using ATV channels (Assuming someone likes to modify off the shelf hardware... ) but you are right, most consumer equipment can’t do that.

We were recording HD video bursts from wildlife cams to 64gb XD cards- solar charging and a large gel cell. The ATV was used to check the setup remotely.
