Most king size bed frames I've seen, have an extra leg (set of legs) under the middle

I would use some form of middle support, if for no other reason then to prevent stress cracks in the wood over time. It could be something as simple and crude as a piece of 2x4 bolted to another (see attachment) where it just drops down and slides fwd or back with another board to drop down to "lock" it into place.

Google's "Sketch-up 8" is a fun and good little (free) program to play around with. You do have to build and piece everything together to do so but its allowed me to come up with a pretty decent folding work bench design. http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/download/index.html

As far as LeeValley- Def a great website (higher priced then others but their stuff is always high quality, I will use their hand planes as an example - the sole requires very little tuning and are basically ready out of the box).

    Some others-

    Rockler- http://www.rockler.com/c/beds-cribs-highchair.cfm?uuid=1765913726771644662384778

    Woodcraft- http://www.woodcraft.com/Category/2083106/Bed-Hardware.aspx

    LumberJocks- http://lumberjocks.com/projects/tag/bed

Americanwoodworker (This might be a bit much but at least might give you some ideas)- http://americanwoodworker.com/blogs/projects/archive/2010/08/10/turned-post-bed.aspx

Fine Woodworking (Awesome magazine and site) would have to get the 14 day trial to use -

    http://www.finewoodworking.com/Plan...tsDirectory.aspx?dir=Beds,+Cradles,+and+Cribs

I have not built a bed myself (yet) but have dont other small furnature, latest being an entryway bench.

What kind of woodworking tools do you have or have access to? Also remember HD rents tools. (not sure what specifically for woodwork though).

    neglect, mostly.
my redneck self would brace the bottom with angle iron. it's strong, it would be removable with just a wrench, and you could hide it with thin pretty wood and it would hold a lot of weight. . . . i have no specialty on the matter. i found a broken bed frame for my bed at my apartment and just welded it back together. and bolted a piece of angle iron across the bottom of it. it doesn't squeak like a wood frame either . . . um . . . when . . . um wood frames usually squeak lol

I built our bed. It's a California King also. I would agree to have some cross members across the width for support. Ours is made of poplar but painted black and rubbed out to look distressed. Used the same bed frame hardware from some of the links you've seen already.

my dad loves woodworking. we are going to build a shop sometime. to do woodworking and keep/work on the 4 wheelers and my Dirt bike. he built a baby crip when my oldest brother who’s 29 was a baby. and he built a deck at the old house 19 years ago. and it is still up to this day. you walked out and had one level and could step down to wear it wrapped around an olive pool.

Good idea on the angle iron! Just so folks know, I DO plan on having cross members going along the inside of the frame to support the mattress. Also, It looks like 1 support in the center, along with the 4 corners, should be adaquate.

If your wife is like mine, she is always looking for (more) storage. Build it with enough height that you can slide some Rubbermaid storage containers under it.
