I'm a bit late to this but since you can't see the internals of the bed I would think it'd be fine to just build it like you would a floor of a house or deck (build a frame then put joists inside of it, mount with off the shelf joist hardware). If you're not going to use a box spring then you'd probably want to use slats, too. I would think, like that, you'd then be able to safely have the whole thing supported just by the four posts at the corners.

Good luck, post if you get lost. 4x4 post 2x6 or 2x8 side and end rails with 2x4 slats 12'' to 16'' o.c. will be good to go.

I took a few pics of my dads bed and he also sent me his Solid Works schematics. It is extremely solid and allows for shrinking and expanding in summer and winter. I will post them when I get to a computer sometime this week.
