Hey all! Have a 2018 TRD Sport Double Cab. Looking to upgrade from the atrocious factory sound. I listen to a lot of talk radio (stern, fantasy football, news), but also big on old school (some new) hip hop. So I like clean deep bass, not looking for the most rattle. Here’s what I’ve put together so far, appreciate your thoughts and/or suggestions...

    Front: Focal 165AS; $285
    Rear: Focal Auditor; $115
    Amp: JL Audio XD500/3; $410
Sub: JL Audio CP106; $190 (store says it fits without removing plastic, I need to verify that)
    Labor/materials: $390
    Taxes: $95
    Total: ~$1490

Have thought about going with JL RD400/4 ($299) and Focal Auditors ($199) in front to cut about $230 in cost. Not sure the savings outweighs the performance of original layout.

I’m far from an audio expert, so this was just me putting it together from what I’ve read.

Note: please don’t let the talk radio stuff sway your opinion, I still like a good beat!

    Thanks!!

Sounds like a really nice set up. Remember, in the end it's all about what makes you happy. I tried the cheap upgrade first, and realized how bad it sounded still. I was not happy with it. I ended up replacing everything except for the stock head unit. Here's what I got. I'm extremely happy with my set up.

Very nice! I was looking at the Hertz as well, but none of the places that I checked out had a demo. I think if I go the cheap route I’ll be annoyed I didn’t just pony up the money and get a good quality system.

For your sub, did you have to pull out the plastic? I’m told the JL CP106 or CP108 will fit. There’s also a guy about 15min from me who builds all the pre-fab boxes for most audio dealers in the Utah, Colorado, Idaho area. He said he has a box that fits in the plastic ... or he can at least make one.

    Thanks for the feedback, pics!

I did not have to pull out any plastic for my sub. In fact, that was one of my requirements that I had was to keep it looking stock as much as possible, and not tear up my interior.

Ditch the rear speakers completly and concentrate your effort on the front. Take those funds and sound deaden the front doors.

Not sure of the output level of the CP106, but in general the rear plastics on these trucks rattle with any real bass volume back there. If it ends up rattling, consider removing those plastics. It’s behind the rear seat and not visible anyway.

I think the factory sound system is pretty nice....for me. Others may want to make it sound like they are in the front row at a (insert your top band name here) concert. But I would rather spend that money on a new gun or maybe an 80 inch TV.

Not knocking the audio mods....but as a retired DJ...I cannot even crank up my stock system enthusiastically any more.

Yeah ... appreciate the post, but as stated in my original post, I think it sounds atrocious.

Here is what I put into my Taco... I did it myself all in for $800. Not pictured is sound deadener in all doors. Many items were open box from Crutchfield.

Audiofrog GS690 6x9's and GS10 1in tweeters, any basic coaxial 6.5 for the rear. Find a Helix P amp on Ebay, it has a built in DSP and more than enough power. Get an Arc Audio Arc 10" sub on woofers etc. itll slam.

Needs a head unit. And labor is way to much. Do it yourself. Super easy

So Wishin’ I had a double cab at times, lol. The Amp is a JL XD1005 & I’ve got two Focal ES165’s for the rear doors but that’s another project. Great little single sub system.

Thanks and good setup! I’m going to look at those, especially the line out. It’s 50/50 on places saying I need one.

Nice! I listened to those in the store last week. Focals have such a good quality to them... never thought I’d true hear a difference.

Thanks for response! Won’t be changing head unit and I’ll screw up a self install. Not my arena ... Grill swap was about as far as I’m comfortable lol!
