Audiobook question, does factory HU support them?

Sorry for the n00b question, I've never used an audio book before. From what I can figure, they are like an MP3 music file that you just play. Is there a special format for the files I need to get? Wondering if I can buy some and put them on a thumbdrive and listen to them through the stock head unit in my 3rd gen, has anyone done that? Would like to listen to books while taking long trips up & down I-5...

I wouldn't think there would be an issue. I assume MP3 format is MP3 format regardless of the content. I play via bluetooth though, not thumbdrive.

    Hopefully someone can verify.

Depends where you get your books from. If you download them in mp3 format then a thumb drive will work.

If you get them from Audible then you can play them off your phone or Android auto/Carplay through the Audible app.

If you get them from your library sometimes they come in a different format... Not sure how or if they can be played.

If you have the book on your phone and the app to play it then Bluetooth may be the way to go.

We'll need more information about where you get your files and what type to fully help.

Interesting... never thought of using a USB. I will try this and let you know. You'd probably have to format the USB a specific way.

If you have a phone I'm sure that would be able to transmit the audio just like a song would. Have you tried that?

I haven't tried it yet so I don't know any of the details. Not even sure that audiobooks are stored in MP3 format like music, I've seen EPUB files before and I think there are several other formats. Was wanting to get "the classics" for free from my library, but not if I will have to buy a subscription to some audio service.

    That's usually the default format.

I'd assume in 2022 the head unit would be capable of reading just about any audio format. If it's MP3, for sure you are g2g.

If it's in another file type, you may be able to convert it. I have a metric ton of music on a flashdrive plugged into the HU. It works great, I can search the drive on the screen, use random, or have it play the entire album. Get a big drive and you can put a ton of music on it in high quality Mp3 or, I believe, lossless WAV format.

I burned my unabridged "Lord Of The Rings" cd's to a thumb drive and it works fine.

I feel you are better off having an audiobook app on your phone. I use the Voice Audiobook Player. It is Open Source and free. You can adjust the playback speed and skip backward and forward. Also most importantly, Voice Audiobook Player remembers where you paused the book even after restarting my phone.
