They're not as prevalent here in TX as in other states...but they're public land, and a little less regulated than the State / National Parks. Sometimes you need a permit to enter, they're not maintained hardly at all, but because of that...you pretty much have the WMA to yourself.

Many moons ago I was a pretty serious junior and U23 racer. I got rid of almost everything but I still have a pretty sweet mountain bike. I’d love to hit the trails sometime.

Damn, you are prepared! So far I have a trailer hitch shackle and... Wait, no that's it. Thinking I'll pick up some jerry cans.

That's the reason I was aiming to get in "early." I'm hoping Friday there would still be spots available to claim. I know the campgrounds have already been booked for months. If that's not possible I'd be down for doing Black Gap. Definitely on my list of places to see and also not an area I'd dare go solo. TxOv has some good info on the area too.

Honestly, the NMBDR is on my list too. I had intended to do Gila NF en route to Overland West but never made it as I opted to do Jambo instead. Taking time off isn't a problem. As long as I'm back in time for Thanksgiving. I know the kid can do two nights away. Pretty sure he'd enjoy another day or two out if that were to happen

Absolutely need a helmet, safety first!

Weather looks iffy, but we will play it by ear.

Yeah. We starting hitting some trails today just right here in town. Part of SATN (south Austin trail network.

Hopefully @riz_atx could post a map of what we did today.
    Haha!!! That looks painful!

I'm willing to keep an open schedule. BBRNP/SP is pretty much on the way, and we can pair up if you don't mind having the company. The name of the game for us is just adventure and exploring, and we haven't been through any of the NM off-roading yet. If plan A doesn't work, plan B C and D are fine by me.

Recovery-wise, I've have tire plugs & air onboard, got the hitch bracket, and will be picking up a kinetic strap. Anything that goes above where I might need more...I'd probably nope my way out of without another vehicle there as a back up.
