Totally unrelated, does anybody have a lead on a decently priced 3rd member for a V6 Tacoma?

Starting to consider some other drivetrain mods for the truck and the first thing I'm looking into is regearing- my truck's cruise control is borderline useless with the 33s on it, as it's constantly shifting between gears.

Is that as simple as buying a kid and just regearing the backend? Does it matter if front/back are different?

If I'm going to do that, would it be the right time to add a locker?

Any idea what the cost would be, roughly, with and without locker?

I would assume the front and the rear need to be geared the same for the transfer case. If you want a locker, you should knock it out at the same time to save on labour costs.

The gears itself are not to expensive. The ARB air locker cost around 1k$

The most you can get away with in gear ratios is about 8% difference, and not for a long period of time. They need to match. Your t case splits power 50/50 and if you have different drive ratios (how many rotations of the drive shaft/gears you have to the number of times your tires spun) but the same amount of power going to them shit WILL hit the fan VERY quickly. Even in 2wd, if you have ADD (auto locking hubs), your front end is always cycling.

As for a locker, that's up to you. The only thing automotive related I don't feel comfortable doing is rehearing, because you need special tools to check tolerances constantly. I did and can, however, add a locker, though it was tough. If you don't feel comfortable doing the locker, do it all at once. However, expect very hefty labor fees, especially if you don't pull your diffs yourself.

As for the cost, what kinda lockers do you want? Air, electronic, spool, mechanical? You need to do research on which suits your needs the best.

I HATED my Aussie (mechanical) up front. Although I have ADDs, and although I never felt it in 2wd, it was a PITA off road and when my truck would brake (example: I have a caliper bolt sheer going 70, the front end locked up so neither of my front wheels could go anywhere, and it took a simple fix into needing to call a wrecker and further damaging my already damaged differential by FORCING the truck to move). Mind you the traction was stellar, I could leave @Toyboata in my dust without hesitation. However, in the 4 months I had it I went through 4 CVs and toasted the diff. It would bang constantly and I couldn't turn in 4WD, the locker added immensely to my power steering problems.

I plan on buying Eatons (e lockers) and conver them to cable shift when I SAS the truck this year with FJ80 axles after learning my lesson about mechanical lockers. Many have no problems however.

I'm not looking or something as intense as a SAS or even dual lockers- just rear is fine. I'd probably go e-locker (buy a TRD OR axle?) or ARB air and just regear everything at once if I do it, but that's sounding like a $2k ordeal... doubt it'll happen.

If you can pull your rear 3rd member and front clamshell and send them to East Coast Gear Supply, and plum the air compressor yourself the cost wouldn't be too bad. Just means your truck would be down for a hot minute

Hmmm... I have an extra vehicle right now so I could conceivably do that. Now to figure out how to sell the regear to the wifey!

When I (finally) get my brake lines installed I'll definitely join ya'll next time to put some scratches on this new armor and test the new suspension. Pics look great!
