Not that I'm sticking up for the bus driver, but the suddenness of the firing was kind of an eye opener to me. I know Texas is Right To Work, but I've seen a lot of worthless turds ride the slow road out the door, due to their employer's fear of a lawsuit.

He intentionally went around a flood barrier with a student on the bus. I'd have fired him on the spot just for that, leaving out the simple fact that the police arrested him for it.

That's the kind of personal judgment that doesn't need to be making decisions regarding the lives of kids.

    Edit: full story here.

I guess you must have missed when I wrote:

Not that I'm sticking up for the bus driver,

I was commenting on the swift nature of the firing, not whether or not there were grounds for that action. Unfortunately, we live in a society that doesn't always do the right thing, or the right thing in an expeditious manner, for fear of being sued, regardless of the strength of their case. As an example of this, one need to look no further than the millions of taxpayer dollars doled out by the Austin City Clowncil to the families of dead perps who have had their sole reason for being here, (oxygen thief), terminated by APD. The Clowncil, I would hope, does a cost/benefit analysis and figures throwing your money away in a settlement is better than telling the families to go ahead and sue.

Most districts use a private company for their buses. Much easier to fire people from there and much less money to get from a law suit.

Oh, and btw, hello all. New TRD OR owner here.

Not sure how one has anything to do with the other. The issues of our city council notwithstanding, a school bus driver who deliberately violates the safety clause of his contract faces the documented repercussion for that violation. Obviously, that penalty was termination. This guy had also only been employed there since August, so I suspect he was still in a probationary period where one already has two virtual strikes on their record.

This isn't a jumping to conclusions issue, it's a clear contract violation issue where the first level action is immediate termination.

I deal with the same thing with contract system administrators and our elevated privilege rules of behavior - a willful violation of the RoB will result in revocation of access (and usually termination) with a comment about it in the member's national background investigation.

Now, if you want to bash the city clowncil on why they keep allowing developers to build 1000 family apartment complexes without first improving the roads and arteries that lead to them, sign me the fuck up for that. Or proposing rail systems in areas that already have public transportation and ignoring the parts of town that don't even have bus service. WTF?

I ain't touching the APD issue with a 100 foot pole.
