I think any fence on a property line is "shared responsibility" but usually that's a gentleman's agreement. Don't know how enforceable it is.

I'm not sure there are any rules. When I bought the house, I went around and introduced myself to the neighbors behind me, and on both sides. Fences aren't a big thing in Minnesota, but I was putting one up right away, so my dogs could have a place to hang out with no worries. I didn't want the neighbors wondering why this new guy was building a fence right away. The folks behind me told me that the people who owned my house previously had always been on them about fixing the existing fence, telling the neighbors it was their responsibility, because they had a pool. The neighbors offered to do it, if the previous owners would split the bill. The neighbors turned down that offer, and while they were out of town one weekend, a super isolated breeze, only existing between those two houses, and only focused on the fence, blew it down. Did I mention that the previous owners were a husband and wife lawyer team? :puke:

Not only did these creeps push the fence down, but they called the cops, and the neighbors were given a citation, for having a pool with no fence. They had to quickly put up a chain link fence, to stay on the right side of the law. Needless to say, the neighbors were happy to see me move in, and I'm friends to this day with both them and the neighbors on one side. Unfortunately, the dear old man who lived on the other side passed away near the end of my time up there.

Some more pics, sorry about the quality, the first two were taken in 2000, the last two in 2003:

    upload_2020-4-30_8-40-33.jpg

You can see the chain link that needed to be put up, along with the crappy side fence on the property line.

Same corner, (I left the rock there), and with the hostas and other flowers out of their winter slumber. That Dal is Stevie, sister of Pepper.

Moving back to Texas with my yet to be wife! The other gal is our neighbor to the right, and yes, that is a spectacular Gen 0 on the trailer!

First day in the new casa, before the furniture was delivered, and youcanbetyourassthatisaShiner. Funny story... during the 4 years I was back in Minnesota, no Shiner could be found. About 10 days after we moved a buddy called from a local watering hole up there, saying he was enjoying a cold Bock. Ferchrissakes!

When I had the fence put in at my house here, I purposely had it installed about 4" inside the property line. Keep in mind that the lot next to me hadn't even been developed yet, but I didn't want any issues with whoever built a house there.

Long story, which I'll spare everyone, but the people that did build the house think the fence is shared property. To the extent that everything on "his side" of the fence is "his". I had the lot surveyed again to confirm, the cops were called out, and we haven't spoken, (nor will), since that day. They are from Dublin, and I've been encouraged to hang the Union Jack from "my" fence.

Here is a picture of the asshole pulling the surveyor stakes out.

I remember when that was going on - you shared it here a while back (not going looking).

They are weird. Domino's delivers 3-4 times a week, and he often sits in the backyard, smoking a cigar and staring into our yard. They have a kid in high school, and hopefully when he graduates, they will move on. They told my wife they moved here because they didn't get along with their neighbors. Hmmmm... maybe the problem is them?

Not much of a mystery. Sounds like Sherlock Holmes could solve it in about 3 seconds, including the 2 seconds it takes him to put on his hat.

Man, neighbors suck. Sometimes the worst part of being in a neighborhood is the people. That blows. Fortunately we bought our house from a guy who's family had been there for years, and the neighbors all grew up together and knew each other. Everyone is friendly.

Funny story, I'm in RI - walked into a liquor store, up front trying to clear-out was cases of Shiner Bock. Half priced because nobody was buying it! I bought 4 cases.

    :eek::eek::eek:

Our neighbors on the other side are total opposites to the dickhead. We installed a gate in the side fence, so we can visit, and often just prop it open, so their dog and ours can play together. They have a key to our house and vice versa...

Yup, that's the kind of neighborhood I grew up in. Currently everyone's a little bit more "closed off" around here though (influenze stuff aside). My neighbor was shocked I called him to let him know his gate had popped open while he was wintering in Florida.

A little something every chance we get.
    Good morning everybody ATX!
I was gonna quote fence stuff, but there was so much! You know we just had all ours redone (330' linear feet, metal poles, 2 gates, 1 double gate) for $8K, so that sounds like a bargain compared to Austin area. Fence guy is a long time County Commissioner, so we just "bypassed" any new survey, because we had existing dead fence with landscape timber posts - installed sometime last 70's. I redid all the 2x4 stringers and fence by myself in the late 80's. We've had to have several of those timbers replaced over time (rot), but my stuff was still intact all those years. This winter wind storm decimated the rest of the timbers, so there you go!
No the original owner clouded the "property line" issue, by getting the then neighbors to "split the cost" on their facing line, so they got the good wood, we got the timbers and 2x4. This time, I told them we wanted the pipe definitely inside that old line, and we get the good - so no question as to who owns said fence. Wife says we "lost a foot" - reminded her that probably half of that wasn't probably ours to begin with.
Anyway, fence begot the the clean up, which begot the shed plan, which begot the greenhouse project currently in progress! Since February I been out there doing something!

I just had a fence put in. Our fence guy said it was our option. On the street side I had the panels face outward, on all others I had them face in. If my neighbors were willing to pitch in I would gone the alternating route. They didn't mind that they got the cross beam side, so I lucked out there except for them not pitching in.

That's right, you heard right, there's a new dance craze that's sweeping the ocean! It'll be bigger than the Mudshark, baby! It's the Tiller Tango!
You get to make a one minute pass, then you spend 5 minutes removing the entanglements! It's so real life, it's awesome!

    Wouldn't you like to know!
I think if it's facing your yard then it's your responsibility but I don't know for sure. All of our fence faces into the yard lol
