I had my 33" mounted in the regular spare location. It fits assuming the following:
1) You hammer the crap out of some of the pressed steel stuff that would otherwise block it.
2) You don't have a trailer harness relocate bracket.
3) You find a way to keep it pulled towards the rear of the truck and away from the differential, especially if you wheel at all.

I ended up with a Wilco Tiregate. YMMV.

I think it varies depending on the specific tire. My Toyos were rubbing the diff and I didn't like it. I think some 285/33s don't do that, depending on the tread.
