Took the truck to a mechanic. They had it for two days and couldn't get it to act up or throw a code. Not even 20 mins of driving around the truck started wanting to stall and misfiring like crazy. From a stop, it'll pull with normal power for a few seconds, then feel like its running of 4 cylinders for a few seconds, and then go back to normal again. Also still hunting for an idle while parked:annoyed:

Just took it for another drive and when I parked the idle started hunting, the stereo just shut off, a relay under the dash started clicking back and forth a bunch, and the HVAC noise I was already getting came back all at once.

So just to for starters and keeping it simple check to make sure that the battery terminals are tight, try wiggling them very hard and make sure thw are free of any corrosion between the terminal and the posts.

Yes they are very clean, terminals are tight, and battery is pretty new.

Sweet build man - so want to ask, how did you end up liking the TC relocation brackets and would you recommend them?

I really like them, although if I were to do it again I would go with the new @ARCHIVE shock relocation kit for the 1st gens. Their kit allows you to run a 2.5'' shock, and keeps the shock a little more vertical than the TC kit.

Thanks, your truck was awesome as well! Why did you end up selling it?

Also, did you ever end up mounting that roof rack you built?

Thanks. Ended up selling it for a few various reasons actually. I ended up having to drive more on the highway due to longer trips than I was expecting (6.5 hour trips one way) and even though the tacoma did descent, loaded down I needed something with a bit more power. Also due to me having to daily drive it I felt couldn't really wheel it on the more serious trails I wanted to go on like the rubicon. It was a super hard decision, probably would have kept it if I were to swap a manual in it, ha.

But anyways yea I did end up mounting it. Have a picture of it on the truck in my build thread, first pic on the top. I built it because at the time, Prinsu didnt offer a rack option for the first gen 4door, so I built my own lo profile design with the same cross bars Prinsu uses actually. Turned out descent I think for hand cutting and tapping everything. Hardest part was following the roof contour

How did you end up mounting it? I can't seem to see any mounts in your photos.

There is some more pics of it on page 17 of my build thread but none really of the mounting. This picture was my first attempt at mounts, and ended up not working out. I did use the little connector nut and bolt shown in this picture though. What I ended up doing was getting aluminum, 1/4" thick and grinding them down to fit the roofs contour(as flat doesnt work if you are mounting close to the edges for stability). Then I drilled a wide hole about half way through the material with a hole all the way through the first hole. That way the head of the allen nut pictured in the photo was flush with the bottom side of the mount. I did two nuts/bolts per aluminum mount.

Then to protect from water leaking in, I cut a neoprene squares with a waterproof goop/glue material to insure absolutely no water could enter. I then drilled holes into the roof of the truck and installed riv nuts to attach the aluminum mounts to. Sorry I dont have pictures of the mounts and dont have the truck now to take any new ones either

Here’s two more horrible quality pictures, had to zoom in on a phone picture. But the fronts I made a little L bracket, and the rest are the 1/4” aluminum pieces 123672B3-C0F0-45F6-A8A3-5FCE59629E61.jpgB6869FA3-F06E-412A-B515-BB6FA4899F94.jpg

When my first gen started hunting at idle, and had intermittent power issues like yours, it was spark plugs and wires. It was dropping to 5 cylinders at random times.

Although you already said you checked that - so mildly pointless comment.

More importantly - sweet build and its really making me miss my first gen, truck was indestructible.

I think I may have figured out the electrical issues. I went though all the grounds on the truck and cleaned them up. Also added a ground from the negative battery terminal to the body. I haven't had electrical issues since.

I'm not getting a p0351 code anymore, but the truck is having power issues around 3000 rpms. It pulls nicely to 3000, kinda gets stuck there and starts sounding like it's running a little rough, and then eventually gets around 3200 and starts pulling nicely again all the way up to rev limiter. It wasn't doing this before all the electrical issues started. Think this could due to the aftermarket ignition coil pack I put on?

If it was misfiring it usually would throw a CEL. Then find what cylinder and switch the aftermarket coil and see if the code changes.. then you’ll know if it’s the coil pack

I haven't gotten a CEL for this yet unfortunately.
