Also, once the pandemic is under control, I'd really like to fire at least one gun of every caliber, even if I don't ever intend on buying one in that particular caliber...

 

I do love my M&P, dam fine gun. 45 acp, great fun!

 

Too bad I am on the left side of the state, otherwise I would let you try some out.

 

I want to fire a .45, and definitely own one, but I had a talk with my dad; My dad says that for a general-purpose (defense and sport), a 9mm is the best bet for someone who is a competent shooter but far from being an expert because it doesn't have as much of a kick to it compared to a .45 round...

Do you carry your .45 ACP, or that is for home defense?

Yes. HAHA, I have a carry 45, a nightstand 45, and others. You just have to find what you like. I tend to adjust what caliber and frame I am carrying by season, weather, and other factors. I actually don't carry a 9mm anymore, about the smallest caliber I carry is 40 S&W and 357.

Is there a difference between 45 ACP and just plain 45? I've seen guns for sale that take one or the other...

45 ACP, is what most Semiautos shoot, there is also 45 autorim and 45 GAP (both rarer), then there is 45 Long Colt, revolvers and rifles.

 

IMO a 45 has less perceived/felt recoil than a 9mm. Hard to explain, but it's more of a push versus a pop. Not trying to convince you to go with a 45. 9mm is a good choice.

I have to agree, for me neither is a bad recoil, for me. But 9mm is more snappy and 45 is more steady push. That has to do with many factors, from bullet weight, load, velocity, barrel, gun weight, and more, but yes that's a great way to describe it.

It gets confusing. I have a ruger revolver that will shoot 45 long colt and 45 acp, but not in the same cylinder. But in a semiauto there is not a conventional one that shoots both.

Now, as we all know, sales of firearms promptly went through the roof in response to current events; My friend, having never fired a gun in his life, wanted a reliable handgun for home defense. He couldn't find a new one, but his friend had a .40 Glock for sale. He test-fired it, liked it, and bought it...

 

My first carry gun was a 40 S&W, nice in between caliber. I still carry it in the summer due to the compact size.

 

And I've decided that down the road I definitely want to buy an AR-15, but that's way down the road; I want a handgun for home defense, but I'm going to wait until (A) I'm done modifying my truck, and (B) I buy a house before I buy anything more than just a handgun I can use for home defense and taking to the range...

 

I'm not in total agreement with statement as good as Beretta. Comparing PT92 to Beretta 92 just try the 2 side by side for whatever reason the Beretta is just a smoother operator. Possibly one of the best 2 compare though quality wise. Much closer in comparison to say any Taurus Revolver vs any S&W Revolver. Best suggestion has been made, go to the range and try them out.
