I would 2nd the rem 870 it's a great shotgun easy to clean and take apart. A Mossberg 500 is another that I would say is a proven no nonsense shotgun. (Most shotguns are lol) Just make sure you go out and use it often as so you well be proficient at it when the time comes.

Like I said in the original post, I am not big on the idea of a handgun and have no plans to buy one for concealed carry. However, I do understand there is no such thing as a "perfect gun," and I would be open to buying an S&W J-frame to stash in my dresser drawer or something. I've been told by some other gun owners here on TW that the appeal of revolvers versus, say, a 9mm or other semi-auto handgun, is that a revolver can sit unused on its side for years collecting dust and be ready to fire no matter what. Prolonged periods of disuse can have a negative affect on the internals of a modern semi-auto handgun, I've been told...

I keep meaning to get one in case a coyote goes after one of my dogs or cats in the evening. Any time I attempt to purchase a gun, I end up with something unpractical but fun. It's difficult to buy a shotgun when the man behind the counter tempts you with something else.

Even though your original question was about shotguns, the two responses about a pistol with a light is spot on.

Mossberg shockwave 590 (smallest thing out there without diving into hand guns or ATF tax stamps)
    or
Stoeger coach gun (nickel plated of course)

these would be my personal recommendations for great reliable bang for the buck in a small maneuverable sized package
of course I am biased here though as I own one of each :oldglory:

No question to ask. Get a shotgun. Get two or three. I know I actually have more.

KNOW HOW THEY FUNCTION. EACH BRAND/MAKE/MODEL HAS A DIFFERENT QUIRK. KNOW THE PATTERN OF BUCKSHOT AND WHAT RANGE.

I prefer the 870 the best. They’re my ‘go to’ shotguns. Two are dressed up in black and one is ready for hunting. One of the two black ones has a pistol grip and tube extension. The other black one has a shoulder buttstock, red dot, and a side saddle full of slugs. KNOW THE QUIRKS FOR COMBAT LOADING AN 870. The wood stocker also has a slug barrel for the big game.

With all these proposals to ban AR-15s and other so-called "assault weapons," maybe I should buy a bunch of them, keep one for myself, and sell the rest for a profit...?

Also, the only thing keeping me from buying a shotgun now is my mom. She doesn't like guns. My dad is a Navy vet who was in for 25 years and took my mom to a shooting range in the 1980s, she tried it, and she hated it.

Yes get a shotgun! And the Remington 870 is the most "bang" for your buck. They have been around a long time and are very reliable.

One of the biggest reasons I want to get a shotgun is because it's fun to shoot shit up in a controlled environment. My first experience with any kind of "firearm" was shooting Matchbox cars with my uncle's BB gun back in 2001 at the age of 12...

I'm of the mind that that a shotgun, regardless of gauge and capacity is absolutely the best firearm for just about anything! Especially home defense.
The ammo is readily available for all sorts of intended uses. Smaller chance of over-penetration and shooting through a wall that you may not know who is behind.(with shot, not slugs)

Most home defense scenarios play out at closer ranges, and precise aiming is usually not an option. Nor is it AS necessary with a shotgun. By the time you are forced to point ANY firearm at someone, the adrenaline will have already made you edgy enough that you only want to focus on the threat.

I feel that the close range stopping power of a shotgun is unequaled.
Also, there are many non-lethal shotgun ammo options if that's for you.(bean bags, rubber bullets, etc..)

As for sporting purposes, hell you can hunt any North American game from squirrels to grizzly!
The shotgun ammo options are just incredible!

Please don't hate on me all you rifle and handgun owners. I am one of you!
Just saying...Yes a shotgun is a very viable option for home defense.

I have an 870 and I really love it. It's rugged, never let's me down, and always makes me proud every year when all my buddies I duck hunt with can't get their bernelli's to fire in -5 temps in the duck blind.

charlie try paying one of your local gun shops a visit and ask to shoulder a bunch of different options, putting your paws on different things may help narrow down possibilities
