Personal opinion as an avid shooter and trained extensively in close quarters combat, get a pistol. A pistol will allow you to open and close doors, move with less restriction, and use things like your phone to call the police one handed. You're not going to be able to realistically buy a short barreled shotgun so a pistol would serve you better. I know there's the old cliché that you can't miss with a shotgun, but I've seen it, plus you can't control that spread. Shotguns loaded with buckshot penetrate walls and doors just as well as a pistol.

A duty sized pistol like a Glock 17/19 or Beretta 92, ect. in my opinion is a better home defense gun over a shotgun anyday.

TL;DR I wanna buy a shotgun regardless answer: Get an Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590, which ever safety you like better.

I have absolutely no criminal record whatsoever. Once the waiting period is over, would I be allowed to just bring the handgun home with no more action required on my part?

I'm not familiar with PA law but assuming its like the rest of the free states yes, it's like buying any other firearm.

Pennsylvania does have a waiting period, and PA is really popular with NJ residents because it's so much easy to buy guns here. In NJ it's virtually impossible for a civilian to obtain a CCP. In Pennsylvania, it is quite easy to obtain a CCP as well. Basically, as long as you are not a convicted and felon and don't have mental problems, you can buy a gun in PA.

And I'm 29 years old so there'd definitely be no issue with age restrictions!

Now what if you don't have or even want a CCP? Just put the gun unloaded in a box in the backseat or something?

Also, my mom is not anti-gun, but she doesn't like them close to home and visibly cringes whenever guns are discussed in her presence.

OP - Absolutely shotgun for home defense. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 are very reliable and relatively inexpensive. Find an 870 and swap out the buttstock for a hogue grip stock and a 20" barrel and you're GTG. Also too...In PA, you can have a handgun in home for home defense, as long as you do not conceal carry. CC = Permit.

And I could get a CCP no problem, I just don't want the responsibility of carrying a weapon. I want one for home defense and for having fun at a shooting range!

You're good then. Websites like classicfirearms.com, aimsurplus.com, jgsales.com are good places to shop for pistols. You order it online, have it shipped to your local gun store and pay a transfer fee and get a background check. After that you have whatever PA does for a waiting period and you have yourself a pistol. Personal recommendations are for a Glock 17 or 19 as they are stupid simple and 9mm ammo is readily available pretty much anywhere that sells ammo. Definitely get yourself a weapon mounted light like a Streamlight TLR-1 which run for about 100 bucks on Amazon.

Alternatively if you feel like joining the master race you can get yourself a CZ :D

Also, pistols in the home require no additional permits to carry however you want. Just don't go walking around town with a hot pistol in your waistband without a concealed license. Again not familiar with PA law, but typically as long as the pistol is unloaded separated from the ammo you can transport it to the range without issue.

There are three or four gun shops within 15 minutes of my house. Also, what to do about my mom when I'm on my own. She'd rather I never have a gun...

I could never fathom taking a life, but one of the things my mom is worried about is if tempers get heated when anyone involved has a gun. I've been known to scream and swear at people when they piss me off, but I am not violent. I think my mom is just being a mom...

She flipped out when I bought a powered subwoofer and an external amp for my truck! My mom is just being a mom. She tries to see the danger or negative aspects of everything...

That's a personal decision you have to make. If you think you can relegate a firearm to only be used as a last resort, when all other attempts to deescalate a situation have failed, retreat is no option and you fear for your life then buy a firearm for self protection. If you have doubt in your mind that it could be used irresponsibly, leave that protection to the police.

I don't fear that it could be used irresponsibly. I fear having to use it anywhere outside of a home defense situation, because of all the potential legal ramifications and bureaucratic BS.
