Contact some local gun clubs and see what courses they offer. Most clubs can point you in a good direction for beginner level courses in gun handling, safety, and aspects of being a responsible owner. Also look into the concealed weapons permit requirements, as it wouldnt be a bad idea to take the required classes and get a permit even if you have no intention to carry.

    I hear ya.

My 870 serves as a HD gun mainly. Bought it from a guy who said it had a "Turkey Barrel". I didn't really care since, I was going to convert it into a HD gun anyways. But, years later I got into deer hunting and bought a deer barrel with a cantilever so the scope sits on that barrel. 30 seconds to convert and very accurate once sighted in. A year after that, the "turkey barrel" was thrown back in and used to hunt Geese and Ducks.

Whatever SG you decide to purchase, be careful of the ammo type in the shell that you use for HD (i.e. slugs vs. buckshot vs birdshot vs dragons breath) :)

A small nice compact .380ACP would do you just fine, and it offers the concealability a shotgun doesn't should you decide to start carrying. Agree with the others that a CCP class is a good thing to take, whether you carry concealed or not. MO has Constitutional Concealed Carry  Another win for :oldglory:

Also, on another note, one thing I'm in favor of is concealed carry reciprocity among all 50 states.

While putting gas in my Taco this one time, there was a limo driver putting gas in his Town Car, and the conversation started with me asking him if he needed a special license to drive a stretch limo. He told me that no special license was required to drive a stretch limo in Pennsylvania, but while he could drive a limo in New Jersey on his Pennsylvania driver's license, limo drivers who were legally NJ residents had to take a written test, pay a fee, and get a chauffeur's license. He then went onto say that he hated picking up customers in Jersey or driving to Jersey for any reason because, among other things, The People's Republic of New Jersey did not have concealed carry reciprocity with Pennsylvania and he couldn't even carry his handgun in the glovebox while driving there. We said goodbye, and as he got in his limo, I say that he was armed, with a handgun of an unknown model in a brown leather holster...

Does the following make sense to anybody...?

I don't fear that a firearm in my possession could be used irresponsibly. I fear having to use that firearm anywhere outside of a home defense situation, because of all the potential legal ramifications and bureaucratic BS.

Even in home defense you gotta dot your t's and cross your eyes.

    Be very careful

If you feel that YOU are responsible enough to handle a firearm then go for it. It may be our right to own them, but there are some people who are not fit to own/handle any firearm. I really like the Mossberg 500 myself but there are many good options out there.

There is absolutely a lot of responsibility for those who choose to CC/OC a handgun legally outside of HD. Each state handles their laws differently. I PM'd you a site for PA firearm owners that may help you a bit more.

Yes, it does. Having a CC permit absolutely does not mean you have to carry. It doesnt even mean you have to own a pistol. It is just another course that can provide information that you can find useful and will make it easier on you if/when you need to buy/transport/carry.
One thing to remember, possibly one of the most important things. IF you have to use a firearm in defense of yourself or another person from a threat, the intent is to STOP THE THREAT. Remember that. the intent is to STOP THE THREAT.
Most people will have issues if they must take a life in self defense. But remember that the idea of self defense is self preservation.

Thanks! Reading it now! I absolutely want a gun for home defense/recreational use, and I may very well apply for a CCP, but my parents are not keen on the idea of carrying a gun in my truck or on my person, and neither am I.

One thing I've dreamt of doing since childhood is shooting up a junk car with a high-powered firearm of some sort!

I'd love to buy a flood-damaged car and shoot it up with that!

One night in florida as a kid, I woke up to my grandfather shooting a guy who was standing over me and my cousin. He shot the guy in the ass with a 12ga loaded with rock salt. Yes, after I got my hearing back, I was laughing about it.

I have the 870 Tactical Express with ghost sites! By far my favorite gun I own. I highly recommend this shotty! But go to the range and learn how to manipulate it, load, download and tactical reload. Prepare for the worst and hope you don’t have to use it

It's only illegal if you get caught.
