Now you're really going to confuse him with that 4Runner center diff lock! ;)

No kidding... LRD (Locking Rear Differential)... could he mean 'RR DIFF LOCK' button (or switch, as Toyota calls 'em)? Are you sure it isn't an Off Road TRD? Do you have the A-TRAC button down by the cig lighter/ 12 volt outlets?

That's exactly what I thought. Hence my post of the RR Diff Lock switch. We'll see what he says. Since he said he's definitely not a "TRD", I bet he's hitting the VSC switch and 'activating' Auto LSD.

First I gotta pick on ya for saying 2x2! But that's not the point here. A lot of people don't like the "TX BRO" package on TW, but I personally have one and love it. I say definitely step up to a 4x4 you won't be upset.

Thanks for all the responses, sorry for any confusion (on my part) about the LRD.
A button down on the left is the slippery car and when pressed, a light comes on the dash saying "Auto LSD". Another light says "TRAC".
I can hear the LSD kick in on an icy road, actually quite effectively.
I wasn't aware that the SR5 came with this feature.
My '08 TRD also didn't have the Clutch Start Cancel, but this one does...I thought it was a great feature in my '96 Tacoma - way back when.
It was also a pleasant surprise that the SR5 had a fully wired towing package.
So far, except for gas mileage, I'm really glad that I traded up from an '08 to a '12.
And the Spruce Mica is just dynamite.
    Cheers guys.

    :D

Yup. 2009+ VSC/ALSD comes standard. It was an option 2005-2008.

A 2012 truck should have an owner's manual if the salesman didn't explain how to use the traction controls... but hey, we know most of the salesman dodn't know much about the truck and the manual falls way short on explaining how to use the system!

This chart is worthy to print out and slip it in you manual... maybe tape it to your visor until you are totally versed with the traction control (TRAC)/ VSC switch!

ALL Tacomas since 2009 have TRAC & AUTO LSD* in 2WD (and 'TRAC' without engine regulation in 4WD-HI). TRAC & VSC and be turned off, as well.

*AUTO LSD is traction control without engine output regulation.

David K: Thanks for all this. And you're right - I didn't get an explanation of how the VSC works or what it does, although that's no excuse. I'll keep the above charts close for a few weeks!
