This is just a matter of curiosity.. It finally rained in socal recently so I wanted to see how my truck handled during a slide and yeah.. all kinds of crazy braking happened.. With everything off, I just got the 1 tire fire which is even more annoying.

That being said, is there a way to get auto LSD to stay on while traction control is off?

Turn off atrac (a quick push of the traction control button) and you'll get auto LSD (takes a second to work). Mine throws 2 wheel roost this way. No idea what it does on pavement.

Hold down the button for several seconds and you're left with a fully open diff and no braking nannies. (Mine peels one strip of grass in this mode)

Maybe you just held the button too long. It should do donuts with the auto LSD on.

I just tried this while out in the snow.. just pressing the button and tried it and for the first few seconds was 2 tire fire then after a few seconds of spinning it shut me down and the trac light flashes. When the LSD is engaged you can feel all the braking bs going on. On second attempt same thing, few seconds of LSD using brakes then it shuts me down. in 4x4 I get fully open dif, auto lsd didn't even work. Either I am doing something wrong or the sport is anti off-road.

you have to be at a full stop in order for it to turn off. and hold the button down for a few seconds like @Sparky2 said.

So there is no way to get auto lsd to work in 4HI? Been doing a lot of reading the features the OR gets of the Sport. I guess there is even a mod to get ATRAC in 4Lo.. but I dont know how legit that is with the 16.

Because in 4HI I had fully open diff, so in my opinion, what difference does it make having 2 rear spin over 1 front 1 rear? Either way I sat there spinning in 2 and 4HI both times only spinning 2 tires on a not very steep snow incline.

Maybe Auto LSD would not help me in that situation.. But I would feel better knowing at least one more tire is getting power when I use 4x4

push the traction control button once while in 4HI and it should go into TRACOFF. This is just like Auto LSD

Interested in the outcome of this. Toyota marketed the Sport as having an LSD....come to find out it is not a mechanical LSD. If it doesn't work in 4WD, its bullshit due to the reasons in post 11!

Anyone ever swapped a TDR OR rear diff in to a sport? Can the ECU be reflashed to work with the locking rear diff?

Guys, guys... of all these posts, I think only Z50king had a good answer.... until he questioned it!

I have written out all the traction control selections and how they work a zillion times. That's okay, it gives me something to do when I am not working!

brianjjeffries wrote: "That being said, is there a way to get auto LSD to stay on while traction control is off?"

A: "AUTO LSD" IS traction control! Traction control is limited slip. Slipping tires have no traction.
Let me continue with some clarifications of names:
AUTO LSD is traction control/limited slip without engine regulation, in 2WD.
TRAC OFF is the SAME but in 4WD-HIGH (2009-2011 it was called TRAC and didn't require button push).

ALL Tacomas (Sport, Off Road, SR, Base) have AUTO LSD and TRAC. In 4WD they have TRAC OFF and TRAC. TRAC OFF is TRAC with engine regulation OFF, so more power while still braking the spinning tires.
    Yes, terrible names Toyota used.

I only know as much as I do about the names due to your write ups on every thread that this comes up in....

I know what to press and what the lights mean while I'm in the truck, but I can't remember when sitting here at my desk at work...

AUTO LSD is a 2WD limited slip mode.
A-TRAC is a 4WD-LOW RANGE mode that is close to the same traction as front and rear lockers.
TRAC OFF is a 4WD-HIGH limited slip mode.
TRAC is the standard mode in 2WD and 4WD-HIGH. It is limited slip LITE (uses brakes and engine regulation to slow tire spin).

*2009-2011 do not have TRAC OFF by that name or require a button push.

OK, so in 4WD high, it will use the rear brakes to limit rear diff slip if I am reading correctly. That is what I expected, but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the info gents.

    Yikes!

A-TRAC is an L4 (4WD LOW RANGE) only system. It has its own button. It should be pressed in anytime you are in low range for maximum traction.

AUTO LSD is a H2 (2WD) system, it is activated by a quick push of the VSC OFF button.

You must stop moving before holding in the VSC button to turn off the VSC and traction control. Never have a reason to do this. Spinning tires are a waste of energy and rubber. That is why all new cars have TRACtion control systems.
