Remember the Soprano’s? “Just when I thought I was out...”

Found this Vid of a Sport 4x4 testing the TRAC system. 2nd and 3rd pull sounds like no motor control kicked in. I’m lead more to believe the non lockers have ALSD in the rear as default when in 4WD. Good dual rear rooster tails on the second pull that was shown.

Having ALSD UP front would be a dream and a crazy pitch. However, explaining PB’s video of his Tacoma’s left front wheel being stopped in mid air is where the answer is. TRAC at work?? Or ALSD at work? Either way, it’s a 3rd Gen evilution.

ALSD (AUTO LSD) is a 2WD only selection (quick push). TRAC and TRAC OFF are choices in 4WD-HIGH. 4WD LOW is still a mystery as to what is going on but clearly, some kind of limited slip that the Second Gens do not have other than the Off Road TRDs with A-TRAC or Locker.

I went to Hungry Valley today as I took the day off and spent the day wheelin with the familia.

First attempt, thanks to PB Fab, I tried that mogul hill where his left front wheel locks in mid air. Gnarly hill, but was super fun.

Went to the back end of Meadows trail and attempted the small steep hill near Old Cottonwood Trail in 4LO, TRAC off. It made it up, however, it slipped a little as it neared the top, and then as the left front creeped over, it began to dig in, but I was able to make it. Went around to Old Cotton Wood Trail and up Meadow Trail.

Wheeled back down to the same steep hill and decided to grow a bigger sack and this time in 4LO, nothing pushed, I moved over 8’ to the right to take on the steepest part of that hill. Shined it always. Not this daily driver. Not today. It made it with ease, however, as soon as the front wheels cleared, the back end started to “bunny hop” as it went over. I’ve seen this before in videos.

I then went on to a crazier hill near Freeman Overlook and conquered a gnarly steep angled hill. Much steeper than the walls. Crazy about brakes , but it’s the truth.

One thing I found interesting was this.

    8C004119-171E-482F-A762-53BFFDA54ED1.jpg

After crawling down a steep hill in 4LO and disengaged into 4HI, the collision stayed off for a bit. But eventually turned back on.

Lastly, I let my better half go for it in the wash aka Road Runner Trail and jumped off to record a video. Told her, floor it no matter what. In 4HI, I noticed the left front, and back two wheels pulsing rooster tails. I’m convinced the system is active on all 4’s.

Does my Tacoma have LSD? It's a 2016, 4x4, 4cyl, SR5 access cab. I'm wondering because I want to use a gear oil additive that says not for use in limited slip differentials. Thanks and sorry if this is a bad thread to ask on.

You have "Simulated" Limited Slip, no clutch packs so you do not need that type of Gear Oil, I believe the Spec for our Trucks is 75W-85

So they are not true limited slip differentials? I want to be sure because I want to add MoS2 (friction modifier) to my gear oil when I service the diffs. Thx

Correct, it is a Simulated Limited Slip, 2008 or 2009 was the last Mechanical Type, you do not need any additives for the 75W-85.

I know it doesn't need any additives but I don't think they will hurt. The instructions say not to use the additive in oil bath clutches or oil controlled limited slip differentials.

The Computer uses the Rear Brakes to Simulate a Limited Slip, if it were my Truck I would not add anything to the 75W-85 as it is not needed.

I run Lucas 85w-140 in the rear. Just adds a little cushion to the gears.

In 2WD mode, push the upper console button for vsc off. That will engage the ALSD. However, several of us believe it is engaged in 4HI and 4LO as well by default. The more you use the 4x4 system, the more giggles you’ll be having. Barring severe rock crawling and what not, it’s gaurenteed fun. This system kicks ass at climbing.

I should be concentrating on my Webster Springs stock appearing hot saw, as the stroked crank finally got back, yet here I am thinking bout brake modulations instead

ONLY 2005-2008 Sport TRD Tacomas had a limited slip differential. Only that differential needed the "special sauce". In 2009, Tacomas went all electric/ABS traction control (limited slip)... no more clutch packs to fail inside a differential!
If you use Mobil One Synthetic Diff Oil, it is rated for both limited slip and open differentials... I would bet other synthetic gear oil brands are too?

Why do these 3rd gen Tacoma’s only do on wheel burnouts? No matter what button you press or how long you hold it?

Only do what on burnouts? 'on'? I don't understand the question.

Geez, David, how many times have you had to do this? I printed it all out on heavy board and pasted into my glove box.

    OK, I got it...
If your truck was an Off Road TRD then it could do two wheel burnouts with the locking differential engaged.
All the other traction aids will help split power between the two wheels on an axle but if a tire spins it is not getting traction and that is the purpose of "limited slip" systems. The system will brake or throttle down to prevent spinning.
A locker is old technology and divides engine power 50/50 between the two tires, no matter if it is needed or not. Great for emergency stuck or preventing stuck but not there to do wheel burnouts. A $35,000 vehicle should not be used for burnouts, seriously right?

Looks like your reply got enbedded in my quote? The Off Road Pre Runner 2WD has a locker too. My Tacoma kicks out dirt from both rear tires in Auto LSD but I neber tried on pavement.
