I have read and researched and can't seem to find an answer that suits me, so I'll give it a shot here. I have a 2019 Limited with 4WD. What kind of situation would I need to activate the AUTO LSD?? Wouldn't 4WD work better?? Thanks.

Unless I am mistaken, that feature is automatically activated when you turn off traction control, or switch to 4lo in the limited. Is there a separate button in the Limited? Auto LSD is just the same as traction control without manipulating the throttle, so you can still get revs to the spinning wheel to clear mud or snow from the tread. It works using the brakes, and is not actually a physical, limited slip differential, just a simulation of one.

what @Stocklocker said. Our trucks don't have a true LSD. Its called TRAC and is activated by going into 4Hi or turning off VSC in 2Hi. It uses the brakes to stop the spinning wheel to force the differential into sending power to the stuck wheel.

I think I understand how the LSD works, but when would I need to use that when I have 4WD available? Just for clarification, I will never off-road (unless a major disaster occurs!), and I don't see using the 4WDLo ever. I live in a mountainous area and often need 4WD for traction on loose gravel and sometime a little mud, but never anything of real challenge.

I'd have to double check but I think its automatically on when you switch to 4Hi. theres a sticky somewhere that did a great job of explaining all of it and when you should turn it off. Let me see if I can find it.

Auto LSD is engaged a lot faster than 4Hi and 4Lo. You can push it anytime, esp if you have some wheel spin happening. Going to 4Hi is going to take a few seconds and you do not what to be hard on the pedal when doing so. Further, give yourself the time to learn how to get in and out of 4Lo reliably. It is a great tool but can be finicky, even between different Tacos since there are several sensors involved. There are a lot of threads about folks asking how to get in / out of 4wd or that they are stuck in one of the modes. Don't be that person.

Finally, about never using it, the manual says to get in 10mi per month for a reason. If you don't get it exercised, it may hang up. 4Hi is easy on a straight section of road from time to time. 4Lo, it is good to engage in your driveway as a check.

Sorry, but no. Auto LSD is a bit more aggressive that TRAC is only works in 2Hi. For SR / SR5 / Sport / Limited, 4Hi has TRAC on by default. For whatever reason, TRAC is off in 4Hi by default for OR / Pro.

Yes, the sticky thread explains it all.

Don’t think about it mostly. The idea in snow is you do not want to stop the spinning wheel, you just want the other wheel to move as well. In slippery snow, trying to unstick yourself, is when it is helpful. If you’re ever been stuck in snow and had traction control limit your throttle, you’ll know what I’m talking about. You need the wheel speed. “When in doubt, throttle out” / “pin it to win it”

Also, engage 4lo every so often (few times a year) or your t-case 4lo actuator will seize and you’ll truly never use it.
