    Looking to replace the oem auto shift knob. I was hoping to get something that would cover more of the ugly skinny chrome shifter shaft.

    I like the style of the AJT and Ellis, but can’t find pics of the LONG version installed on the Tacomas.

    Don't know if longer version sits lower on shaft :eek: or not but rethreaded and shortened mine about 1/2 in to 5/8 inch . Its the lowest it can go and still be able to go into 2L

    Member on here made a thread on here about rethreading and shortening the shaft . That's how I got (stole lol ) the idea

    There website says the long knobs are the same installed height as the short knob, it does cover more of the shaft.

    The only thing you might run into is the knob bottoming our against comsole before it is tight. I tried the stock trd shifter off my wife’s T4R on my second gen and that’s what happened.

    I want to get the trd shiffter knob but i have the same thought. That it won’t cover the shaft as much as stock

    Adam at AJT Design said that only the short knobs will fit on the Tacoma.

    @AJT DESIGN

    Yeah like the website states.

    But why doesn’t it fit? Is it coming in contact when shifting into 2L? Couldn’t the jam nuts be slightly adjusted to compensate?

    The threads probably don’t start until higher up in the taller knob meaning yeah you’ll bottom out at 2L or sooner unless you somehow extend the shift rod length.

    FJ shifters in a Taco will do the same thing but they have room inside to add a coupling nut with some rod to extend for clearance. I’m assuming same for 4Runners, etc given the other threads posted above.

    He only stated that the short knob is the only one that fits. He didn’t give a reason why, the communication was through email.

    I'm running the stock FJ shifter in my Tacoma. I just shoved some stuff up the knob so it wouldn't thread too far down. I forget what it was I put in there, possibly foam. I have it so it just clears the console when in L and 2.

    Sorry for not elaborating more in my email. Basically the long and short knobs are the same in terms of where the threads on the knob are relative to the top of the knob. All of our knobs sit at about the same height as stock. The long was developed to cover more of the chrome shaft for FJs, 5th Gen 4R and Tundras. The shaft on Tacomas is not long enough to accommodate our long knob, but if it was the knob would not sit higher once installed. Hope that makes sense.

    The jam nuts are not really for adjusting height, so much as the precise position of the screw pattern.
