So, my kid got an 02 prerunner and the auto floor shifter doesn't require the ratchet button to be pressed to shift from drive into neutral. Is this normal? It jumped into neutral as he pulled onto the highway leaving him facing traffic for a tense moment before he figured it out..Doesn't seem right to me...

Thanks for your replies. I figure he was bouncing his way onto the highway not very gently. But if your offroading and it jumps into neutral and you overrev that's a problem too. Seems strange...

They have rev limiters for a reason. Also, I work for a Chevrolet dealership, and EVERY vehicle I have driven does this. You are ok

Out of park it will shift without having to press the button on top, however it should not be able to go into revers "R", 2, or L (1) without pressing the button. D to N or R to N/D is normal, anything else is not. Also Welcome!

From drive to neutral with no button pressing or other things is pretty normal for most automatics, theres lockouts from neutral to Reverse/Park & from drive 2 into low

Automatics are designed to allow a quick emergency shift from D to N. Just in case, say, unexpected gas pedal sticking. haha
