As the design engineer, you know for absolute certain the starters are designed for a huge duty cycle.
Unless you are the design engineer, or have a copy of the design specs, you are only guessing.

Failure of bearings or not, this is irrelevant to high frequency re-starting without full pressure in the oil galleys.
Frequent restarting of the engine increases the wear on the engine higher than simply starting it once and leaving it on.

Perhaps you are OK with an engine lasting only 80k miles instead of 250k miles.
I have to ask how many as/s systems are on the road with 250k miles.

    I don't have a dog in this event, as I don't have as/s in my 2023.
    It's just an academic observation.
    YMMV from mine.

Again, we don’t see widespread starter or bearing failures in vehicles equipped with AS/S systems. what you’re doing is called conjecture

If Toyota did the cooling robust they would have an electric water pump at the turbo coolant loop so when you turn off the engine the water pump still runs.

This is the case in my BMW m2 with s55 engine.

Does the radiator fan run too? I think it does in my brother-in-laws Mazda. Water circulation by itself is a slow cooling, needs airflow to quickly remove the heat. Perhaps a slow cool is enough for this application. Just curious.

Toyota knows what they're doing. The turbo will be fine. Get the extended warranty if you have doubts.

It’s critical that Toyota did their homework b/c these engines must be bulletproof for 200-300k mi.

Even though it’s true that most first owners likely won’t keep their truck over 100k mi, they still purchase on the statistical fact that it could go forever, and thus their trade value/resale depends on it. Tacoma’s reputation comes from 2nd owners, 3rd, and so on. Just like the “off-road” image that many owners never even test, these turbo four bangers need to uphold an established reputation of lasting forever. Heck, even more so, b/c they now cost a fortune. Otherwise why not buy a Ranger, if they all blow up at 100k mi.

Yes the radiator fan runs as well when the engine turns off and more adequate cooling is needed. Engine has both a mechanical belt driven water pump and an electric pump for the turbo.

Also has a water to air charge air cooler which is better than your traditional air to air cooler.

My bet is that thermosiphon effects should be satisfactory. Water carries heat away pretty effectively. You don’t need to get the turbo down to cold after shutdown. Even the hottest coolant tempts are way below where turbo bearing damage/coking would occur.

I actually agree, but we still have to wait 10-15 years to find out for sure.

But think of how much greener the world is going to be as a result of this. Each time the engine shuts off, Greta Thunberg smiles a bit more.

Really? The air is beautiful where I am. -10 and fresh, not many electric vehicles, how’s that possible?
